A Lot of Room for Improvement

Pros

• Most of your coworkers will be nice, competent and fun to be around • Work-life balance is good (no travel required) • Chances are, you will find a manager that supports your development • PTO amounts are good for consultants • In office events can be fun and office space is nice • Strong focus on volunteering and community engagement

Cons

• Like other reviews have said, Sendero is not true management consulting. It is usually IT Project Management, and often staff aug. In my time here, I’ve seen maybe 2 instances of high level managers doing some consulting. This is made even more obvious when you’re staffed on a client that employs another consulting firm; you quickly realize how different our work is from actual consulting. • Sendero consistently bends to the unreasonable expectations of clients at the expense of employees. Employees can ask for sometimes years to be rolled off, but Sendero will not in fear of losing a client or losing money. As a result, Sendero loses valuable employees instead. • The performance review process is super overcomplicated. Efforts to streamline it have not done much to provide clarity. It seems as if many promotions are based on who is most liked at the company rather than who has done the work to deserve it. • Feedback is encouraged, but if your feedback is negative it is met with defensiveness. Company wide surveys feel like they are used to make employees feel like things will be addressed, but changes are rarely made and if they are, it takes a long time. • Pay and benefits are much lower than other consulting firms. • Diversity and inclusion continues to be an issue firm-wide. It feels like statements made by top leaders about current events are made because they know they “need” to do it, but not committing to or knowing how to follow through on crucial steps.

People are great, but culture is surface-level

Pros

-The people here are amazing. The relationships I've built here are the main reasons I stay. -Opportunities for those at non-management levels to gain supervisory experience on client projects and/or by leading committees or nonprofit projects -The office space and company-sponsored events are all nice/high quality -The bonus at the end of the year is usually good -There is a clear career path to follow

Cons

-Politics and favoritism are really tough here. Certain people who have been here a while get away with more than others, particularly from a culture perspective. Certain people are protected by management and get away with not following the processes that everyone else has to follow. -There is a serious lack of diversity at all levels of the firm and no real action has been taken to address it (our D&I Committee primarily does surface-level celebratory events). If action has been taken behind the scenes, it has not been communicated (part of the problem) and we have not seen results. -As much as they claim the contrary, constructive feedback and change is not welcome here. This stifles growth and innovation and will impact Sendero's performance as a firm. It has already had a huge impact on turnover this year. Feedback is addressed with 'fluffy' educational initiatives that have no real action or accountability measures OR is met with defensiveness (think: "this is what we've always done and you need to just understand why we do it"). -Management has an old-school mentality about a lot of things, such as flexible working arrangements, and is not interested in listening to new ideas -I just don't trust the people in leadership who have only ever worked at Sendero to know how to successfully run a business of this size and growth rate. We need to be leveraging more outside expertise, both internally and on the consulting side. -Promotions are decided on a committee-basis instead of just working it out with your Career Adviser / manager / HR. The promotion process overall is way over-engineered and outdated.

Thanks for taking the time to leave a review! We couldn't agree more that our people are amazing. I'd like to encourage you to find a member of the SLT that you are most comfortable with sharing your concerns. Even though we aim high, people and processes are never perfect. We need courageous and calm leaders to bring forward constructive feedback and ideas. I also hope you'll also reiterate these thoughts and more in our annual culture survey that is currently open. Thank you for the feedback!

Pros

The people that join this firm are great!

Cons

Though this company considers itself a management consulting firm, most of the opportunities for Associates and Analyst are staff augmentation roles for IT implementation projects. This client work does not align with the skillsets need to start or grow a career in management consulting and usually involves long hours, tough clients, and a lack of professional development opportunities.

Thanks for the review. We agree that our people are great! I'd like to encourage you to talk with your CA, Engagement Lead, or any Management Team member you feel comfortable with about your thoughts/expectations for management consulting work, what opportunities are present in your current role, and how to best grow from those opportunities.
