Pros

Sigma has a wonderful culture and atmosphere - people are friendly, coworkers enjoy socializing together, and there's excitement around Sigma's continued success. The engineering department has a great VP who has vision and experience scaling small teams. Due to the founders being technical, there's a strong engineering culture within the company, with technical feasibility a first-class citizen among leadership. For example, due to site reliability issues, all of engineering took a month to focus on stability and tech debt instead of feature development, something I've never experienced on another production app. Post-pandemic, the company has moved to a hybrid work culture, with teams in the office 2-3 days / week. The leadership is fantastic. I've seen people be fired, but their last day of "official" employment delayed just so their options vest. Instead of trying to screw people out of every dollar like many places might, Sigma has consistently done right by people. They also do a comp adjustment to ensure existing engineers aren't getting paid less than incoming engineers.

Cons

On the one hand, having two founders who are brilliantly technical means there are tremendous opportunities to learn and grow. Both Rob and Jason actively and regularly push and review code. However, they both much prefer doing to teaching/leading, so less experienced engineers often find themselves floundering. I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention that one of the founders has a rather contentious approach that not everyone enjoys. If you work in a similar part of the codebase as him, you'll have to prove to him you know what you're doing before he trusts you. In the absence of that trust, expect extensive PR reviews. Feedback loop is nonexistent - both IC and managers often have no idea how they're doing until it's too late. Iteration speed is often high, with it occasionally impacting work / life balance. Leadership is a bit of a stickler about coming into the office.

I wanted to add some of my own experience and perspective here: - We definitely expect people to show up at the office. We’ve found that people learn and grow much faster that way, and we are very transparent about this throughout the interview process. - As the company grows, we’ve been hiring managers and putting in place processes for providing more feedback. I’m sorry you did not feel you were getting enough. We try not to surprise people. - Our founders do write code and review a lot of PRs. I’ve found that people learn very quickly by taking on that feedback, understanding it, and improving their code. Sigma is a very complex application, and learning from the people who wrote a key part of it is a great way to get up to speed quickly. Suggestion for a feedback process is appreciated and is top of mind with leadership. I’m sorry your experience might not have been great.

My manager led me to believe that I was doing what needed to be done, meanwhile the demands of the position were shifting and I was given no opportunity or training to try and fit the mold.

Pros

Out of all the startups I’ve worked for, Sigma is the first where I feel truly valued. I mean that from a benefits and comp perspective, as well as a cultural perspective. Here are just a few of the positives I’ve experienced in my 3+ years here: Career Trajectory - It’s nice to see an org that promotes internally. I’ve seen dozens of colleagues step into promotions they’ve earned and have been promoted myself twice. Politics are minimal and meritocracy generally stands. It is possible to pave the career path you envision for yourself here, which is not something I've seen in other organizations. Employee equity - I’ve been able to watch my vested shares climb in value. Last funding round, the company offered us a buy back program where we could cash out on a portion of our shares. For some of us, that equaled a new car or a home downpayment. People - You get to learn from remarkably smart people here. There is a strong culture of mentorship and perpetual learning. On top of that, most people are genuine, which makes for a more enjoyable and productive work environment. People will go out of their way to help you, even if they barely know you. Product - The product is completely differentiated from the rest of the market. POC/win conversion rates speak for themselves. Most prospects who complete a POC end up buying because no competitor can solve the problems that we do. This makes it easy to trust the growth projections that are presented to us and understand what we're working toward. Values - Plenty of startups claim to have vales; most don’t embed them within their everyday culture. Sigma goes out of their way to keep values front and center as the company grows. For example, people are highlighted weekly in all hands for living specific values and recognized daily in Slack. We have culture clubs that come up with creative ways to make sure that our values matter like hosting events, talks, and contests. These efforts combined give Sigma a tight-knit feel, even though we’ve expanded significantly.

Cons

Fast-paced - Not your typical startup kind of fast-paced; maybe 2x that. That means you’ll pay for it in catch up time when you take PTO. If you prefer a traditional 9-5, this is not the place for you. Lack of remote opportunities - Most roles are in-office, even though many employees prefer a hybrid model.
