Horrendous/inexperienced management, you are just a number, sub par day rates, expensive low coverage medical insurance, 401k with minimal match that can and has been suspended, 2/1 only rotation, understaffed, vessel repairs are either put off or it’s an emergency to get them done, vendors go without being paid for extended periods leading them to require payment for previous work before returning and even prepayment in some cases, bills are usually paid late, unresolved mechanical issues are hidden from auditors, the Chief Safety Officer’s number one priority is gathering/reporting employee gossip to the Vice President (owners wife), the “great” safety record is due to accidents/incidents/groundings either not being reported and/or CSO not investigating/taking action once they have been unofficially reported, you will hear them tout how they don’t have maritime insurance claims and receive reductions in their insurance rates but paying out of pocket to repair damaged vessels instead of using insurance does not equate to safety, substantial incidents/accidents are swept under the rug while personnel involved in minor incidents are written-up/suspended, morale is generally bad, holiday pay is a farce requiring local employees on their hitch to remain home (on call) as to not pay their day rate while out of town crew get fully compensated, the holiday pay memo has a paragraph on all of the ways that you will not be compensated on the holiday including being on your hitch but at a shipyard, complete famine for extended periods leading up to the next habitual refinance of the company, then it’s spending time, a dozen boats are only moving around 25 ships a month, there is no training program in house or otherwise, over the last several years they’ve cycled through over a dozen port captain/managers, HR is a title there but is non existent, the Chief Human Resource Officer is off campus and a two pack a day smoker that seems to despise everyone, the over the top anti-employee gets patted on the head gossiping about employees with the VP (owners wife) and for saving money so she is cut throat against the very men that make the company, at one point one of said CHRO’s fully insured rent houses burned down, the President/Owner was led believe it was her home, she received a “substantial” bonus and a week off with pay to recover, a company wide email was sent out about it, when notified of the farce the VP’s response was “that’s not true”, case closed, despite grandiose titles there’s not captain or hint of experience in the building, the company is ran like weekend at Bernie’s with the VP consistently targeting employees, getting in the President/Owners ear, and pulling strings, vessels are regularly ran illegally, mostly GMDSS equipped tugs without licensed operators, they do not like fat people, women are treated slightly better than fattys, fat women have no chance, women’s appearances are highly criticized and they are required to wear a cover up/jacket/shaw (no sexy shoulder exposure), men in the office are in uniform and required to wear a jacket/tie when the President/Owner is in town, crew members are required to be clean shaven, have short hair, be tobacco/tattoo/piercing/jewelry free, in full long sleeve uniform, including the brass buckle/straight gig line, if you shaved yesterday you will be talked to and possibly suspended today for stubble, the President/Owner regularly makes sexist/racist/inappropriate remarks that upper management play off citing his age, a Chief Port Engineer has been “talked to” repeatedly about inappropriate touching/comments towards female coworkers with zero disciplinary action, rules are very important unless they are inconvenient, be prepared for multiple meetings per week, you will receive lots of emails, if you misspell a word there’s a good chance that you will be reprimanded via email with lots of additional personnel copied, public shaming is a common occurrence, multiple employees have been sued after leaving the company, titles are handed out like candy on Halloween, raises not so much, the majority of positive reviews on here were done by current (at the time) employees at the request/pressure of the VP, multiple crew including myself asked for exit interviews repeatedly to try to shed some light, but they were not granted…
