Pros

I started at S&S with stars in my eyes about writing and editing children's books. The people I worked with were fantastic, and the office was great. I was looking forward to creating lots of wonderful books for children.

Cons

I'm sure (at least I hope) things are different at different publishing houses. But at S&S they were terrified to take chances on new authors, and if one genre of books did well, they pumped out as many books in that genre (and usually from the same authors) as they possibly could. We had many brainstorms where ideas for new books and new authors came up and were rejected, only to be picked up and used by different publishing houses. I had my heart broken in many brainstorms!

Pros

The best coworkers, until they eventually all leave.

Cons

I'm sure experiences differ, but working at S&S, especially after acquisition by a private equity form, has been less than ideal. Increasingly profit driven.
