Pros

As a data scientist at Smartasset, I have been particularly happy with the extent to which data drives the decisions that we make. When I was interviewing for my role here it immediately became clear that this would be a great place for someone with a scientific mindset, and in the years since this has only been reinforced. Leadership as a whole is extremely data-driven in their decision making, and I find that people that are able to present clear and convincing evidence behind their thinking do well. Everyone on the data team works extremely hard to build and maintain credibility, and team leadership emphasizes alignment with company goals. If I need to bounce an idea off someone or brainstorm, there is a long list of people in the company that I know I will be able to have a productive conversation with. This environment has allowed me to develop both my hard and soft skills and also gives me confidence in developing creative solutions to difficult and nuanced problems. Overall, I have found that strong work is appreciated and tangibly rewarded, and I have personally been promoted as a result of success on important projects. Being fully remote is definitely nice, and I believe that the company as a whole understands that this is contributing to our success. There have been weeks where I have had to work long hours, but I have always understood why the situation called for that in those cases. I have faced no friction when I have to duck out for doctor appointments or my child gets sent home sick. If I mention that I'm going to finish something over the weekend, that is discouraged in most cases. Overall, work-life balance is very reasonable.

Cons

The fact that my work has consequences definitely adds pressure to my job. Team members are given a lot of autonomy, which also comes with a lot of responsibility. It can be a difficult environment for people without a lot of agency or the ability/desire to critically evaluate their own work.

Thank you for sharing such thoughtful feedback — it means a lot to hear this perspective from someone who’s been part of SmartAsset for several years. We’re proud to be a company where data isn’t just something we analyze, but a foundation for how we make decisions across teams. It’s great to hear that this approach has created an environment where collaboration, curiosity, and continuous learning thrive. We’re equally glad that you’ve felt supported in balancing meaningful work with flexibility when life requires it — that balance is something we take seriously. Thank you for calling out the strength of our Data team and leadership, and for helping us continue to build a culture where strong work is recognized and rewarded.

Pros

Good Pay and decent coworkers

Cons

Spinning your wheels and being punished for not performing well due to a product that is not well received. Forget a PIP. They'll let you go in a snap of a finger.

I really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience and I’m truly sorry to hear it didn’t reflect what we work hard to create for our Account Executives. I care deeply about building a team where AEs feel supported, have access to hands-on managers, and are given every opportunity to succeed. Over the past year, we’ve focused heavily on making improvements during the ramp and training experience, and on ways to make our performance management process clearer to help people turn things around before it ever reaches a tough point. If your experience felt different from that, I’d really like to understand more. Please don’t hesitate to reach out through our People Ops team peopleops@smartasset.com, I’d welcome the chance to connect directly and hear your perspective. — Britt Pennington, Senior Director of Sales

Pros

TL;DR: - Fully remote, never returning to office - Ownership opportunities - A diverse and knowledgable cohort of associates - Dedication to quality over quantity I joined SmartAsset 3 years ago, moving as a supervisor of Software Developers from a large corporate in-person job. I was drawn to SmartAsset by its full remote culture and its situation in the marketplace. Before the interview process, I had no idea the high bar that they set within their technology department. Meeting with the engineers, the director, and the VP showed me how much I'd be able to learn by joining SmartAsset. Over the past 3 years, that has continued to be the case. Add in the ownership possibilities via options and RSUs and you get a rare place to work and grow.

Cons

TL;DR: - Lean and therefore requires wearing multiple hats - Growing always comes with growth pain - Limited "standard" benefits SmartAsset is still very much a start-up that is growing to its fullest. That means the team sizes can be limited. Everyone sometimes find themselves filling the responsibilities of co-workers when the need arises. This is two of the values of SmartAsset, to "We Trust Each Other: We have trust in what we do and in one another" and "We Collaborate: We value people's talent, ideas, and voices." With that start-up in mind, some of the standard benefits like 401k match might not be as strong as larger companies. Compensation might also be weaker compared to companies in your area, but those companies probably don't operate out of your living room / office so I'd consider it a wash.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful review — and for the past three years you’ve invested in SmartAsset. We’re so glad to hear your experience reflects the collaboration, learning, and ownership we strive to build across every team. You captured it perfectly — our fully remote culture, high technical bar, and commitment to quality are what make SmartAsset special, but they also come with the realities of being a lean, growing company. We appreciate your perspective on where we can continue to evolve as we scale, particularly around benefits and resources, and that feedback is something we actively review each year. We’re grateful to have team members like you who help shape what SmartAsset is today and what it will become next.
