Pros

At the same time as interviewing with Canary, I interviewed or met with almost all NYC startups at a similar stage. I immediately felt "at home" at Canary. It's tough to put into words what makes up the Canary culture and type of people, but values like "Have strong opinions but hold them loosely" or "Trust each other" aren't just put into a Google Doc somewhere, they are lived. It's also the caliber of people - everyone is really smart, comes from places like Apple, Ideo, Google, and they are qualified not just for their current role but completely qualified to own their responsibilities even as they grow quickly with Canary's growth. This focus on "who is the best" in hiring means that we have incredibly diversity - languages spoken, gender, backgrounds (fine arts in the engineering team), hobbies and hidden talents (juggling, basketball, coffee roasting, ...), we have people in hoodies and people in blazers (though do leave the suit at home when you come to interview!) And most importantly, everyone is here because they believe in the mission of Canary and the meaning that that brings to their work. Which is really the second big "pro" of working at Canary: You are making history if you join Canary. Canary is not a "smart home" company that is about connecting the home, Canary is creating real meaning in people's lives by catching burglars as much as baby's first steps. The product is solving a real problem, and that's why we're in thousands of stores and growing quickly. There are few startups that have such a great opportunity to deliver something meaningful to millions of people, and Canary is set up well to continue this growth. When you're offered a seat on a rocket ship...

Cons

This applies to most experiences in a high growth company, but since you'll be invested and passionate about the company's growth, it will lead you to prioritize "working" over other things, though frankly it often doesn't feel like "work" anyway. It also means that you might take it personally if anyone ever says something negative about the product or the company, in which case there are many "haters gonna hate" gifs on the internet.

Pros

Canary is a rapid growing startup in NYC that has done and continues to do huge things in its short time as a company. I truly believe that Canary will be the next greatest product company of our generation. - The people. A huge emphasis is placed on hiring not only the most experienced and talented people in their respective fields but on those who "fit" the Canary culture. As a result we're surrounded by incredibly smart and hardworking individuals who are also friendly, well-rounded, diverse and generally really good people. Also, everyone hangs out even longer than they need to after work (including on Friday nights after drinks & demos) because they genuinely enjoy spending time with their colleagues. This is my fifth job and I've never experienced such a sense of camaraderie anywhere else I've worked. - The culture and values. Everyone who works here is passionate about building innovative products that change the world. There's a lot of transparency, collaboration, and open communication across the company. Every decision is made with our users/customers in mind. - Innovation. Working alongside such innovative thinkers and makers is truly inspiring. There's a general attitude that anything is possible, which forces people to think creatively about how to get things done with limited resources. - Diversity. Canary is a very international company with employees from around the world. As a woman in the company, it's great to see that there are a variety of initiatives being pushed to encourage female employees to "lean in." From mentorship and a great maternity policy to Canary Ladies Nights once a month (where all of the women in the company go out for happy hour) and everything else in between, it's clear that Canary is very forward looking company in this space. - The benefits/perks. Great healthcare and 401k plans, unlimited vacation days, company outings/sponsored events, catered lunch every day, in-house massages, the occasional manicure, and the list goes on. - An awesome office and fun work environment. Bright space with panoramic city views, beanbag chairs, standing desks, a foosball table, lots of Nerf gun wars, and a coffee roasting contraption that our engineers hacked together (which also has its own Twitter feed...), etc.

Cons

- The hours can be long because there's always more to do. I suspect that this holds true in most startup environments though. - Things move extremely fast, so pressure to deliver is very high. - Unlimited snacks (requires serious will power!)

Pros

-Amazing team -Transparent leadership -So many perks! (in-office massages, catered lunches, team happy hours, commuter benefits) -Worthy product and cause -Strong support for female employees in a male-driven industry -Growth potential within organization

Cons

-Long hours (though getting better as team grows) and lofty timelines/goals. Typical start-up conditions and part of working for a company that wants to be the absolute best.
