Pros

As a company, Smith & Nephew has a glowing reputation in the community. The pay is fairly good to start, the benefits are good, and there is a certain amount of prestige that goes along with working there.

Cons

Communication between shifts is lacking; and procedures from one department to another vary greatly. Although Trauma and Reconstruction were combined, it feels like they are two separate companies. The atmosphere from one building to another almost seems like you're looking at a different company altogether. Sr management has made some questionable decisions in the last three years: at the same time they were pushing for inventory reductions in manufacturing and the distribution center, they build another (larger) distribution center. Also, they spent $15M on a nice showcase office building and empty lot when there was empty office space being remodeled on the current campus. The profit sharing/bonus system is different for manufacturing employees vs. administrative employees, a point not lost on those that work in manufacturing.

Pros

The company had very good benefits. No micro managing from direct manager. Employees are allowed to take vacation time with no hesitation.

Cons

Upper management does not care that the cost of their product is too high in a highly competative market with a lot of competition. Losing alot of accounts across the board because they are not willing to budge on pricing.
