Toxic Leadership in LA Office

Pros

Overall, SmithGroup is a solid company with many talented people. The benefits are good and the culture is mostly collaborative across studios, practices and offices.

Cons

LA Office leadership is toxic. Erratic decision making, constant "musical chairs" with staff, strategic amnesia and poor communication drives high turnover. A lot of "yes" men and women exhibiting fealty to the Office Director creates an undemocratic and fear-based culture. Lack of accountability and ever-shifting directives leads to staff not knowing where they stand or what they’re supposed to do.

Great growth opportunity

Pros

Highly motivated staff, great opportunities for promotion and professional growth.

Cons

The LA office has grown tremendously and there is some lack of strategy to manage that growth in a responsible way. Titles that current employees earned are being handed out like candy to new employees walking in the door. There is an obvious disconnect between some of the long term employees and the new ones, part of that is due to the lack of standards and company culture in this particular office. Too much work and not enough staff to do the work was causing some to feel burned out and think about leaving the firm as I did. I also understand that salaries are out of whack due to a tight employment market causing new employees to have higher salaries than existing employees that have more experience.

Pros

Great people who are in the same prison... most do tend to stick together... others take advantage. You might make a friend... hopefully you'll meet someone who will get you a better job.

Cons

Everything. Even the "bagel Monday" is stale... The office design is a junk shop of wannabe progressive, the administrative staff is hired on a "bored, poor and just need a job" basis. If there is any talent there it sinks to the level of working at the DMV. And don't even think about Senior Management. This is a place in which Senior Management dislikes everyone and tells them on a daily basis. This is not a long term career place. Get in, take as much (sloppy) documentation, then leave and advance your career. Stay FAR away from Workplace. It is an asp nest.
