Pros

A lot of very bright, talented and nice people work here. Great work/life balance with extra fridays off. Beautiful SF office space.

Cons

Big firm, stodgy, very political. Very inconsistent quality control. Tends to have an "assembly line" mentality, which may appear to be efficient but definitely not a good place to learn or advance a career. About twenty people have been laid off this past year. Management has not officially acknowledged any of these layoffs. Everything is heard through the grapevine. No "thank you we wish him/her well." Communication, among many other things, is quite lacking.

Pros

The people you work with have the best personalities. There is no toxic work environment. There is no drama. There are some people in particular who are so passionate and excited about their work, it's inspiring and motivating. We also have a diverse staff, which give perspective to your work and life as your career develops.

Cons

There are a lot of people that complain they do not get paid enough. When you receive offers from other companies that are tens of thousands higher than what you're getting paid now, it's hard to stay with SmithGroup. So people come and go frequently, and some come back after leaving for a while. You are truly sacrificing the money you make for the great culture that is there.

Pros

Alternate Fridays off from March to December (but you have to make up for the hours).

Cons

Want people to know about the internal politics and REALITY of working in this place 1. If you are looking for a long-term career, this is not the place unless you know how to be in good books with upper management. 2. Within 2 years, 8 out of 20 employees from a team either left or got laid off. Upper management needs to consider the fact that employees are not always at fault but a principal can be. 3. There has been a lot of favoritism between the internal team and principles. And it's too obvious. Due to this a lot of talented employees leave the firm within 1-2 years. 4. There are not a lot of opportunities for growth. 5. The management does NOT care about their employees who have dedicated half their lives to the firm and as a result very skilled and experienced people get laid off by less experienced leaders. 6. Over worked, under paid.
