Good experience if you’re ok with mostly production work.

Pros

A lot of people with years of experience. Nice coffee machines.

Cons

There is a lot of gossiping and cliques so if you don’t have someone who says good things about you and protects you, you won’t get on good projects. You don’t get a desk and have to pack up everyday and put your stuff in a locker. Everyday you have to look for a place to sit. It’s a waste of time. There are a lot of female managers and that’s good. They talk about equality, but don’t do a lot to bring up and promote the other women in the office. No real mentorship, just a lot of talk about it.

In the offices where this has been implemented, it has been proven to be very popular with most of our staff and has led to more organic collaboration across our teams and enhanced our company culture. This approach is being re-examined in light of the pandemic, but we believe that it still offers many benefits.

Good Choice for the Highly Motivated

Pros

Smithgroup is better than the average architecture firm when it comes to technology. The project management processes are robust, so things generally run smoothly. Hours are moderate. Projects are relatively high stature. Working here will dramatically benefit your portfolio because they get good quality projects with sophisticated clients in both public and private sector. Highly motivated people do well here.

Cons

There are a few people in mid and senior positions that negatively influence the culture. Because the firm rarely if ever fires anyone, these people are have a detrimental effect on morale and productivity, and turnover is high. The firm uses promotion as a retention strategy resulting in less than qualified mid level leadership. The rigor of building technology depends on the project type - it is inconsistent throughout the firm. There are some in house experts, but you have to seek them out.

Pros

Great benefits - starting employees get 15 days off with the ability to buy and sell time. Also get 16 Fridays off a year working overtime every other week. Perks like lots of free food and service activities. Good work/life balance.

Cons

Not enough professional development for young employees. Starting salaries are considerably lower than industry standard. Assigned a mentor who, while nice, really didn't help me professionally much at all. Huge company means lots of hoops to jump through and lots of bureaucracy and politics.
