Wasting funding on marketing when it can be spent on refining the product is not a good sign for the future of the company. Marketing jumps on the bandwagon of whatever the trend of the day is...one day it's social, then internet of things, then Big Data, and confuses the heck out of everyone including our poor sales team who end up frustrated. Using big company politics to get concessions from the CEO and stoking his ego is not the way to make a difference in a startup or add any value. Senior marketing people have left because of marketing leadership's insecurities, controlling nature, and highly emotional demeanors. Spending money like water and hiring the young and inexperienced just because they look attractive instead of experienced veterans with domain knowledge is shameful.
