Pros

Great Benefits such as pension, 401K, education allowance etc. Job security.....

Cons

Bad moral, short vision role on some group, efficiency statistics were destroying frontline employee health and public safety, it is depends on the department and supervision you follow, some of them nice and helpful on your career path. There still some supervisors or managers are bullies, they believe micromanagement is a proper technique to manage their employee. They abused their job duties against their unfavorite employees. I do agree with the previous comment came from WC claims adjuster that left on an earlier post, retaliations are around in workgroup. If you have higher/better educational background or thinker types style person, this may not be a good working place for you. They do like people keeping mouth shut and do the job, I am not sure higher up management style because these situations happened a lot from lower level or entry level management group to union represented employees. Union mostly helping large or class action issues such as benefits, wages or hours problem but their jobs are very limited and may not be able to help all kinds of employment relationships problems. Some union steward had lack of trainings for union rights.

Pros

- benefits - pension - extremely difficult to get fired - internal mobility; provide you with open opportunities to change your position or group - military style family oriented culture - strong support of veterans and community awareness - prioritize safety and doing the right thing (morally) - innovative relative to other utilities - extremely respectful and friendly culture

Cons

- inefficient - getting into upper management is politics (although for some this is an advantage) - company is not accountable for poor performers unless it pertains to the public (hence politics) - company is usually blind to poor results - prioritize convenience in place of productivity - prioritize seniority over performance - poor employee development and training - not a good place for new ideas (new ideas are risky) - sometimes the emphasis on peer to peer respect overpowers the need for honest evaluations to be made and expressed.
