Opportunities, but at a cost

Pros

- Great exposure to the field without being siloed - Strong personal relationships and work atmosphere - Never boring - Well-intentioned staff and management - Opportunities to participate in field work

Cons

- Junior and mid-level staff are over-worked and often have poor work-life balance - Growth and a few poor hiring decisions have put pressure on mid-level staff to make up for others' lack of billability and the lack of adequate financial and supervisory support - Reorganization has given less emphasis to strong mentor/supervisor relationships

Pros

Competitive starting compensation for people with a master’s degree relative to other firms like Chemonics Good exposure to project management, including budgets, contracts, supervising consultants, and client communications

Cons

Senior staff either tends to micromanage or be totally absent Few mentoring or professional development opportunities because the firm focuses on winning contracts Limited technical work or technical discussions Unclear job advancement path Poor work-life balance. 60+ hour work weeks are typical, including working on vacations, holidays, and weekends, which is expected by senior management

Zero Management

Pros

The only pro about working at social impact is that you rarely have to go into the office. Since there is really no leadership or management, there is zero accountability. Work from home, don't show up - it never really matters.

Cons

complete lack of leadership or management, guidance or protocol. Most of the senior management team works less than 3 days per week. Employees are generally miserable - and most are looking for other jobs. Only work here if you are desperate, or just want to sit under the radar and collect a paycheck.
