Pros

Salary unbeatable, benefits, quick commute. Chance to work credit and some overtime hours from time to time. Secure job, retirement

Cons

Too many to mention. Complete absence of opportunities to advance. Opportunity only exists for well connected individuals. Lack of experience/ education does not hinder connected individuals from advancing.

Pros

I have enjoyed great work/life balance. Salaries are transparent and raises are automatic. No pressure to work overtime, but it is available. Great benefits.

Cons

My cons are in line with a lot of others listed here. Government change is slow. Agonizingly slow. It seems nearly impossible to advance, especially at larger offices. Favoritism is rampant. Management values numbers over quality of service. There is no diversity of work and it is VERY hard to get a JEP or detail to be doing something with a little variety. The monotony of the work breeds laziness and contempt. There is also no understanding of the stress of the job. Instead the press you to take more calls when really people would perform better if given some time during the day to unwind or work on alternative work.

Pros

Benefits are great. Lots of vacation, pension, etc. Flexible schedules.

Cons

Not a good place to be for an attorney. (I do have friends in other positions in SSA that are satisfied.) Very, very minimal opportunities for growth. Not doing actual legal work. Incredibly boring. Super bureaucratic. SSA underpays attorneys, even by government standards. Hard workers are not valued. If all you care about is retirement and vacation time, this is the place for you. If you want to do any kind of meaningful or satisfying legal work, stay away!
