Pros

Great job security in Baltimore headquarters (keep your credit &a legal record clean, especially during probation); flex-time & alternate work schedule for most positions; federal benefit package is still great.

Cons

Some jobs are by their nature repetitive and boring; long training classes for certain jobs are stressful. Constant fed bashing from Fox News & other media outlets hurts morale and pressures congress & President to cut pay/benefits, as happened recently with multi-year federal pay freeze. SSA jobs at Baltimore headquarters are ranked at lower GS grade levels than equivalent positions with other federal agencies in/around DC.

Excellent health, vision, and dental; federal holidays, you can accumulate vacation time fast

Cons

So many people do the bare minimum, it is impossible to get fired, customers are angry all the time from the poor service, little advancement opportunities, too much red tape, management treats

Pros

I heard from a reliable source that two members of management were trying to track down the specific party responsible for a negative review posted on this site by an employee. Oh, wait. I guess that's not a "pro" at all. Oops.

Cons

It is impossible to work here for any length of time and not witness several examples of egregious nepotism in hiring practices. With often times hundreds of interested people applying for the same job on USAJobs, I find it nearly impossible to believe that many of the people who are hired from those postings--who happen to be the family members of existing supervisors/management--really are the best qualified for the position. Additionally, there is a (quietly discussed) agreement among many employees that favoritism, race, and gender have as much to do with getting a detail/promotion as one's actual qualifications given the agency's strive towards proving how diverse it is.
