Pros

Social Secuirty is a very challenging workplace. The amount of information one needs to assimilate is staggering, and dealing with the public is different everyday. It is never boring. I love the aspect of helping people out at difficult times in their lives. The benefits are fantastic. You get generous vacation time right away, good retirement, and almost never are forced to work overtime.

Cons

Many of the co-workers have been there for their entire career and are very intolerant of new people. They are not willing to help new employees out, and actually enjoy pointing out mistakes you make to management. Because of the proximity to the public, I was sick a lot. I think people may take off a sick day from work and then decide since they are home anyway to come to Social Security.

Pros

Money and Benefits and excellent. Raises every year if you play nice. Time off when needed but be careful your first year.

Cons

Poor communication among management. POLITICS abound in the SSA office. Learn what your manager wants and don't deviate from this.

Pros

Great pay and benefits. There is a satisfaction in helping people in a time of need.

Cons

The training, while time consuming is not very effective. Does not deal with real life situations. Policynet, which contains all of SSA 's various rules and regulations is not very user friendly. Some policies are worded in a way that contradicts itself. Sometime I feel that I should have a law degree to understand it.
