Pros

Family Friendly leave benefits (Lots of Leave), Salary, and Thrift Savings Plan (Retirement) and Early Out Benefits (25yrs of Service at any age)

Cons

High Stress, Public Contact in reception gets tedious after a while(Sometimes you wish you can just walk out of it all), You'll never be caught up with your work (You must be super organized to Master this, I have in my 21 years of service :D ) You must do Reception everyday aside from having other work assigned which gets you very backup up with your work (Management doesn't care about this)

Pros

As always, the great thing about working for the Federal Government is the benefits. Usually you start a little lower salary wise, but guaranteed yearly step and cost of living increases is great, and if you are in a ladder position, then you get even bigger yearly raises. If you can get along with management and get your job done, they give you support and opportunities.

Cons

The biggest problem is upper management. Generally there is a lack of communication between branches. There is a serious need for resources to be shared and employees to understand how each division works. However, management (despite programs that are supposed to change this) routinely gives excuses as to not hiring employees without direct experience of the job. I support promotion from within, of course, but there is almost no ability to move to a different career track once you are in. Some regions do allow for more movement, but mine is pretty content with having as little as possible.

Pros

Lots of leave. Felt good when I could help people, which was very rare, because those who were truly disabled after a lifetime of work were frequently screwed by the system.

Cons

Management is horrible. They treat their people terribly. About half of the people working there are completely incompetent and lucky to have jobs. They will never be fired. The other half are talented, smart people who are completely wasted doing this work. They are underappreciated, underpaid, and under the impression that this is the only thing out there for them. It was sad. Many of the people who come to apply for disability aren't disabled at all, just poor/desperate, whatever. Those who are disabled (and after working their entire lives) are often denied and then forced to fight, often for years, while their savings run out, homes are foreclosed, and marriages fall apart. It was awful to see and to be unable to help. The system is broken, and management doesn't care. Middle management pretends that it is all fine.
