Don't do it

Pros

If you're a server, it's nice to pick up shifts when you want to. But don't expect to leave when your shift is over. Events almost never end on time and you're expected to stay until everything is cleaned up and finished.

Cons

Sometimes, you end up working 17+ hour shifts. You can't fulfill job requirements and take a break. You get in trouble for not taking a break and get in trouble if job requirements are not fulfilled due to taking a break. In reality, you receive hardly any support or help from management. During our largest event of the year, the director said, " I would help, but I'm not wearing the right shoes for this." If you take time off, you are then punished with fewer hours. Toxic management. Limited career development if you are not one of the favorites or play a fake political game. No training or company standards. It is chaos and doesn't benefit anybody's physical or mental health working there. There is a high turnover rate for a reason. The pay also looks good, and you are usually promised overtime, which is true. However, you don't see overtime pay because about half of it is taxed (I think it is taxed as a bonus, not overtime). You will work yourself to death trying to see the overtime paycheck, which is never what you want it to be. So, the extra work is not worth it.

Pros

Making lifelong friendships, professional and personal.

Cons

Just about everyone with "manager" or "director" in their title have to be the most unprofessional people I've ever witnessed. I witnessed the assistant general manager actually say to a supervisor, "you don't know sh-t, do you?" and "I have zero confidence in your ability to do this job". The sales team, at least 2 of the managers, are connected at the hip and their work ethic reflects this. Same lack of communication to other departments, same type of mistakes being made with consideration for the ripple effect that goes all the way to the customer noticing. The bad mouthing of other employees is legendary and for what ever the need to publicly humiliate people seems to be a requirement for management to the hourly staff.

Great Company

Pros

Good benefits and with the "premium pay" scale we pay better than any other food service company in our smallish town. Great opportunities for advancement, we are in almost every state, and 23 other countries that makes transferring to another unit is fairly easy.

Cons

In my unit at least, training can be spotty at best. There is a huge amount of training resources specifically designed for Sodexo food service segments online but finding the time to get any of it done during a shift is almost impossible.
