Great place to start, bad place to stay.

Pros

- A very relaxed environment, which is great for people who are looking to get away from high stress jobs, get into their first job or are looking to break into the IT industry. - Casual dress code makes it comfortable to work, and the beer cart Fridays are popular (but they get old quickly... you don't want to get drunk with your boss around!). - Hours are reasonable, it is very uncommon to have to work more than 8 hours a day, and if you have to work longer, it is generally because you want to save yourself some work on the next day!

Cons

- Salaries are very low, and only the very top performers are promoted - if you're just average, you won't be going anywhere. If you want to stay in the IT industry, use Softchoice as a launching point for a career with another company. This also leads to major turnover... so expect to change loyalties frequently. - Limited options for lunch means that you either have to pack lunch frequently, or are eating McDonalds junk more often than you would want to. - Though they don't award promotions for tenure, there is clearly a sense that if you aren't in sales, you aren't going anywhere. Don't try to launch your career from marketing / finance / IT.

Pros

A fun and casual environment. co-workers are great and friendly people! Can be long hours & hard work, but generally fun and upbeat. Not a cube-life environment. Benefits and vacation are good. Atmosphere and social aspects are good. People are young and not too corporate and very helpful to each other. The company and it's people are fairly socially-conscience in what they do and feel.

Cons

Downsides: generally (very) low pay, and low recognition for who actually does what. Treatment is not the same accross the board...depending on the role, these factors can be drastically different. Can be very draining.

Pros

Softchoice, when I was there, was a fun, young company with great learning potential in technology and sales. They hire young managers and move inside sales to outside sales or to inside sales managers regularly. There is opportunity to negotiate large orders and travel to headquarters for annual meetings and training events. They really strive to be the best and make it a fun place to work. Their motto is work hard play hard.

Cons

There are high expectations to meet your sales quota and understand (i.e. be able to quote) a wide variety of products. You are constantly monitored through various statistics that the wily are able to manipulate to make themselves seem more productive than they are in reality. The managers are young and say what they think they are supposed to say than to truly connect with their employees. There is a high turnover because inside sales is an entry level position, and for those who make it to the next level, there is a high standard and they have no problem letting you go if you can't meet the numbers. They strive for excellent customer service and if you can't meet those standards you'll be let go as well.
