We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed some of our great perks and the people you got to work alongside, though saddened to hear there were parts of your experience with Sonder you didn’t enjoy. The Hospitality Agent role is a very multifaceted one, where those individuals have to do a variety of different tasks everyday. We hear your frustrations in our expense reimbursement process, and are working to implement an employee credit card program to eliminate this type of frustration for our employees. Sonder puts great emphasis on being a supportive, empathetic and inclusive space for our employees. Our CEO welcomes and encourages feedback and ideas and is candid in acknowledging where he can improve or could have done better. The layoffs were a tough reality Sonder had to face, like many other organizations, due to COVID but we are disappointed to hear you didn’t feel like we handled that process well for you. We had to move fast, but we would be more than happy to send a note to your colleagues on your behalf if you’d like us to. We are grateful to you for the time you spent with us, and the hard work you put forth. Should you care to share anymore specific details with us on how we can improve or have us pass a goodbye note along to your team, please reach out to our People Partners at peoplepartners@sonder.com

Pros

I loved the people and the Denver office is wonderful. Fun culture, casual environment, dog friendly office, & flexible.

Cons

The pay was okay, but the benefits are terrible. PTO for hourly employees is an industry low (if you are salaried you get unlimited, hourly employees do not), no 401K match, and health insurance premium is very high. Company is not organized and the communication between departments is lacking. All this being said, I still enjoyed my time working there. I was laid off with the March lay offs of around like 400 employees. I was fine with it, it is a bad situation and it happens. That is until I looked on LinkedIn and saw that only a few weeks after layoffs, Sonder was hiring again in the Financial Operations department. What a joke. Sonder put several people out of work from that department, people who had families and bills to pay. To turn around and rehire someone new (only weeks after they laid off a significant amount of people) instead of offering to move people from that department around to a different position and retaining the employees that they had is so disrespectful.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this thoughtful review. We couldn’t agree more about the people and culture in our Denver office, and are happy to learn you loved it too. Our LinkedIn profile needs to be updated — that was a mistake. We’re working with our Talent team now to confirm that roles we’re unable to fill at this time, including in the Financial Operations department, are removed from the site. When we’re able to start expanding our teams again, many of those who were impacted by layoffs will be first on our outreach list. When it comes to benefits, we always strive to give as much to our people as we can afford, and as we grow and become more stable, we want to do more. We hope you understand that our packages are in-line with similar stage start-ups, and it simply isn’t rational today to spend more given our financial position. We’d love to offer the same level of benefits as more mature companies some day. We do offer other great benefits to support our people, such as stock options for all employees and Sonder stay credits. If there’s anything we can do to help you during this transition, please reach out to hrbp@sonder.com.

Pros

Some really great people working hard to make a difference although nobody notices.

Cons

Where to start. At Sonder there is a consistent pattern of hiring narcissistic directors whose sole goal is self-promotion and to cash in big when (and if) there is an IPO. Employees are not supported, grown or retrained when systems change overnight, (which they do quite often). You are just let go. No warning. The culture while you work there is nasty, mean-girl high school sort of antics. One director was heard telling a direct report that they disgust them, another use to pretend to strangle people if they did something wrong. Twice the head of recruiting has just got up from their desk and walked out due to pressure to hire, hire, hire at all costs. Most people try to hang in there for one year and ultimately leave. It is a high pressure, low pay, toxic environment. They care about growth only so they look enticing for investors. How employees are treated is of no importance to them. Word to the wise, if you are interviewing here read ALL the reviews but know the good ones are posted by recruiting. There was a big internal push to have people post positive reviews because the truth was hurting their recruiting efforts.

We are very sorry to hear about your experience with us, and thank you for taking the time to provide this feedback. The behaviors you’ve described — patterns of self-promotion, lack of support, disrespect — are very concerning. This is not what our culture stands for, and we don’t take it lightly. If you’re open to it, we’d appreciate the opportunity to dig into this further to understand the specifics of these interactions. Feel free to reach out to hrbp@sonder.com.
