Pros

Salaries are generally good, 401K is excellent - 100% match for first 3% and 50% on the next 3% of employee contributions, profit sharing, flexible work timings, generally stable employment, Sony historically has not been a company that lays off people at the drop of a hat, in a manner of speaking, although that has been changing in recent times.

Cons

Work is remote controlled from Tokyo, little to no autonomy for the US operation, so decisions take a long time to be made. Sometimes there is not enough transparency as to who is in control, and who is the real decision maker. Work efficiency sometimes suffers due to too many people involved in decision making, and the afore-mentioned lack of transparency of decision making. Staying back in office for late night video/telephone conference meetings with Tokyo teams had been the norm rather than the exception, due to the time zone difference. Lately the medical benefits, bonuses and profit sharing have been poor, whereas in Sony's heyday they had been truly spectacular.

Pros

Depending on your business unit and position, you may have the opportunity to travel to Tokyo HQ, conferences, etc. The pay is good, but below average for corporations of similar stature and certainly not worth the insane overtime. Despite hard times, Sony is still a prestigious name to work for, and projects can be interesting.

Cons

Expect to work like a dog. Any mention of work/life balance is lip service and nothing more. As in many large organizations, there is little oversight and accountability, so if you are of the persuasion, you can get away with murder. If you aren't, expect those that are to keep you working 24/7 to carry their dead weight. Corporate culture is staid, conservative and as you can probably surmise, acridly bitter. If you aren't Japanese, you can forget the notion that you will ever be promoted. There are very few western "lifers" in the company, and those with a long term investment here are meandering due to low motivation. Project work is highly interesting and challenging, but anything worthwhile is suffocated by the culture of committees, meetings and paralyzing indecision or apathy.
