Pros

Was a great place a long time ago

Cons

Sotheby’s used to be a masterpiece; now it’s just a forgery living off its reputation from over 5 years ago. Leadership is more interested in enriching themselves with share options than serving clients (let alone balancing employee morale), and ‘career growth’ here is about as rare as an undiscovered Picasso. If you value culture, innovation, or even very basic honesty, decency and integrity, this place isn’t it. Sotheby’s might have been a great name, but under this management, it’s about as valuable as an NFT.

Not worth it

Pros

You will get a in-depth understanding of the art world and the house's place in it, wonderful place to network if you know who to talk to. Many edifying opportunities for personal growth. Basically, you'll become more cultured if you pay attention. If you have a good manager

Cons

Learning will plateau in the first two months. You're surrounded by nepo-babies that are threatened at if you're (incredibly) competent. Upper management has their head in the clouds and reminiscences about the glory days 20 years ago. Highly patriarchal environment, microagressions abound. Little to no representation for BIPOC individuals in the company at large. Managers don't know how to lead, and more often than not you just run errands that make little sense on your resume. The company will just use you if you don't use them first. Incredibly underpaid for the toxic environment that it is.

Great exposure, low pay

Pros

Company name holds value on a resume, great exposure to artwork and events, tend to promote within which is nice if you plan to work there long term. Ultimately happy with my experience but nothing to rave about.

Cons

Low pay regardless of seniority, so most people who work there have family wealth and can afford to work there without good pay. Serious lack of diversity (they know it and don’t care). Maybe 3 people of color in the whole New York building so it’s really just a bunch of white prep school kids who grew up and could afford to work there for the prestige while their parents foot the bill. High turnover rate. Seems like the dream to work here in the contemporary or impressionist departments until you do and realize it’s nothing special.
