Pretty community— but really a cesspool.
Pros
South Port Square is very close to the beautiful town of Punta Gorda. Great opportunities for golf/fishing/boating. Not a beach town. That said, there are some nice islands in the area. Folks who live the country club or marina lifestyle will find that South Port Square misses the mark in a significant way.
Cons
The South Port Square community makes a great first impression from a visual perspective— but once you’re inside, it’s woefully behind the times, and willfully so. And don’t expect quality daily activities for the residents. Most are forced to stay in their apartments because there really is very little quality of life and resident participation. Many of the residential apartments are completely uninhabitable, and have been for as long as a decade or more. Mold, plumbing, and sewer issues abound, and the executive director is unwilling to address and fix them, and only does so as a last resort— and then only marginally. He presents initially as a competent, caring manager, but in reality he openly lies to the residents, the staff, and the residents’ families. He’s truly an incompetent dolt. Good people who care don’t last. Anyone who props up the ED will find him supportive, unless it becomes expedient for him to scapegoat the manager. That happens regularly. The regional team— in its entirety— is just a bunch of failed Brookdale hanger-ons who happened to transition when Brookdale bowed out after years of their failure at the CCRC level. They are too busy kissing their own selves’ backsides rather than insuring that the residents get what they’re paying for. LCS management is no better— they allow these failed regional managers to stay in place and hold them to zero accountability. Accountability is only held at community level. Stay away. And for God’s sake, don’t let your parents move there. They will be cheated and lied to.
