Pros

Very collegial/friendly environment. I feel that my work is truly impactful given how necessary electricity is. There are plenty of employee organizations if you want to get involved. They have a Student of the Business program that really helps you understand the company as a whole. Having an on-site gym was nice. The health insurance plan is pretty great. The PPP annual bonus can be quite generous in a good year.

Cons

If you are not good at networking, upward advancement will likely be difficult for you. The culture places heavy emphasis on word of mouth. Upward advancement takes a while because there is a lot of employee retention at the senior levels. There are probably worse problems to have as a company. This is more indicative of how nice it is to work here. Additionally, the electricity industry doesn't seem like it has very much growth on the horizons.

Pros

The location had a gym and a decent cafeteria.

Cons

The monopoly that is Southern Company is terrible. The feudal system under which contract workers there operate is entirely unfair. The nepotism of this place is ridiculous. The mere notion that you would have someone work a contract position anywhere from 10-15 years and yet you offer permanent positions to underqualified new contract workers simply because they have family that are employees is terrible. This company has 100's of contractors that make up 50-55% of their staff and yet these people are strung along for years and treated like sub standard human beings. Fortunately, I negotiated a decent wage with my contractor, so it made the politics worth my time. However, this was only for a short while.

Pros

Southern Culture of people always smiling. And that's it ! Smart patches of people.

Cons

Smiles when you around , gossip as soon as you are off. Back room policies and conversation Pettiness with feedback Management support is politically driven People are managed by negative perspectives and threats. Frowned upon to bring innovative ideas to the table. It's all about status quo. It's a good ol' boy culture. Hyper sensitive egos throughout the company. Especially managerial people! They think world owes it to them. If you are young and ambitious, you better look somewhere else. If you are in mid career flight and want only a paycheck, welcome and be ready to have thick skin to tolerate ego spins. It seems like company is chasing its own tail. Creating problems to resolving them...
