Pros

My employment at SpaceBound, Inc. started in the Customer Service Department. Prior to joining SpaceBound, Inc., I had been in sales management where my worth was only as good as the sales numbers I produced the day before. It was refreshing to know that my value was not going to be based solely on sales numbers but rather, my work ethic and commitment to our customers. After three years I was promoted and was able to sharpen my leadership skills and understand what servant leadership truly is. The CEO at SpaceBound made it a priority to schedule time on a monthly basis to meet with all departments and do team building exercises to strengthen not only each department but how they interact with each other. I have never worked with a more intelligent group of people in my career and consider myself lucky having known these individuals. There was not a day that went by where I didn’t learn or better myself.

Cons

The only cons I would point out are that the Company is in a smaller town and there are limited options for lunch or after-work activities. Also, it took me about four months to get used to monthly payroll, but they don’t hold pay and started benefits from day one.

Pros

I joined the SpaceBound team back in early 1990’s – when the company was much smaller. The business was on the precipice of significant growth as internet commerce was beginning to soar. I was given autonomy to basically create a department from the ground up though mechanizing manual processes and developing methods and procedures. SpaceBound gave me to freedom to be directly involved in contract negotiations, vendor selection and strategic planning. Throughout my time there, I had been both challenged and stretched professionally. My work and ingenuity was recognized and valued. It was refreshing to have been part of a team of employees that respected one another and collectively shared a standard of excellence in their work.

Cons

The new location of the company was in a small city with limited options for lunch. Streets can be a little dangerous during the winter time with snow, wind and ice.

Pros

Senior leadership empowers managers and also encourages everyone to be leaders. They gave us books (I mostly read), that gave me a better perspective on the characteristics of a good manager. Truly open door policy from CEO. We didn’t always agree but at least they were willing to hear me out. CEO always stated that if I could show logic behind my decisions then there was no way I would be punished. I liked that I was given the power to make decisions. They would do team building exercises to break up the monotony of the day. Some are cheesy but was good to get a break from the computer screen. I won a couple hundred bucks from these challenges and the weekly trivia they have. In fact, the extra hundred bucks I got monthly from trivia was my personal fun-money. They were family oriented and understood what it was like to be a working parent. (I ended up leaving to work a different shift due to family scheduling conflicts). I haven’t yet, but they actually invited me to come back for company events where they have big company picnics with prizes and giveaways. My kids always enjoyed the inflatables.

Cons

Train tracks near the location cause some delays when coming or going. Always had to set aside an extra 10 minutes for commute since I always managed to run late when there was a train coming. You had to work on Labor Day and Memorial Day and no time off during 4th quarter because it is a retail dot-com business. Salary positions use a time clock even though salary people worked 9-6 with half hour lunch. You only get paid monthly and they don’t have it direct deposit, at least when I was there.
