Pros

I'll be frank: if you are after a challenging engineering problem, there are very few companies offering the challenges that SpaceX can offer. The feedback loop on your designs involves flying a sapcecraft/rocket, and there is no sweeter feel than seeing your contribution perform in the complicated mechanical orchestra that is flying spacecraft and launching rockets. The amount of responsibility a young engineer is given can be claustrophobic at times, and its most definitely sink or swim. But as you start finding that stroke and swimming, you'll find what SpaceX wants you to: the self confidence to solve problems that you search out and find. You need to learn modal FEA? Here's the license, figure it out. Production struggling with making your designs? Straighten it out. The berth that you are given is wide, and the expectations are high. One engineer (that has since quit) once told me the best part of his day was driving by another aerospace company and knowing that he personally is accomplishing the same amount as 3-4 engineers anywhere else. We are doing awesome things every day, and being offered a job at SpaceX is a big deal, the only question you'll have to answer is "How much do i want to sacrifice to have these cool problems?" The heyday of the small sexy spacex is long gone, but the challenges and opportunities to solve them haven't disappeared.

Cons

Zero career development. Very long review process. Lower pay compared to industry contemporaries. Being held accountable for problems out of your control. Work life balance can be good in a lull, which rarely happens. Very large chasm between management and boots on the ground.

Pros

-As an engineer, you get to work on some of the coolest projects in the world -Immediate impact of work is visible -Most people are insanely motivated to do their best, which makes it an exciting and fast paced work environment -Some of the smartest people work at SpaceX -Engineers are given huge responsibilities and power to impact so many aspects of the rocket -Technically, there is nearly unlimited room to learn and improve

Cons

-Long hours at times can be draining, even if they go by quickly, little effort by upper management to find solutions to reduce these hours -Middle management receives mixed directives due to unclear goals/vague messages from director/executive level leadership -Pay is not very competitive -No 401(k) matching -Path for promotion is bleak even for top performers depending on team layout -Company culture is not always supportive of working "normal" hours -Upper management is highly disconnected from "grunt engineering" and consistently demonstrates poor decision making -Schedules/budgets are unreasonable and lead to repeated effort or net more expensive projects -Long term opportunity costs of short term decisions seem to be rarely considered at upper level -Once the "cool factor" wears off, lower level engineering quickly becomes frustrating due to inconsistent directive from upper level management

Pros

I struggle to even think of a company doing something as exciting. The sense of purpose and urgency both are evident in every team here. Being part of an incredibly talented group singly focused on the promise of Mars is definitely a unique experience. That said, the daily grind is not all hollywood sci-fi and rocket launches. The day-to-day work is hard and sometimes tedious. It's usually satisfying and rewarding though.

Cons

- Burnout is real. Management seems tuned in to it though, and wants to make sure you're okay, but I wish it didn't happen at all. - The pace can seem both way too fast when demands are made of you, and glacially slow when waiting for the rest of the company to move forward (eg. return to flight).
