Pros

Was hired quickly and pay was better than average, but that was because they were desperate for engineers. I learned a tremendous amount because I was fortunate enough to be placed on a shift with a supportive manager and senior engineers. Most others were not so lucky.

Cons

Nearly everything else. Incompetent leadership all the way from Directors to the CEO. Virtually nothing at this company works efficiently. It got to the point where I was surprised we were paid on time. It's a "sink or swim" mentality as they throw you into the deep end with no formal training. Many new hires were placed on shifts where managers and senior engineers would/could not provide adequate support. Many had spent years there and still couldn't be relied on because they were simply terrible hires and/or never got the support they needed to learn and advance. However, during my time, no one was ever fired for incompetence because they were desperate for personnel. If you reported a problem in procedure, not only would the Directors not fix it, they would often make it worse in their response. "Don't ask why" was a common motto. We lost an average of one engineer (including managers) per month during my time there. Any efforts made to standardize or streamline our network and tools were heavily delayed and poorly implemented. The most astonishing dysfunction was that we were actually pitted against other teams. There was motivation and even reward for finding ways to place blame on different departments, when in reality it was simply the tremendous room for error in our poorly designed and maintained infrastructure. Dishonesty was common place because you couldn't give other teams opportunity to spin an event against yours.

Pros

Good benefits, pay, and bonus, depending on where you are. Very flexible. Business causal dress, though some dress more formally, and others wear jeans. Some vendors, but heavy use of linux and open source. Complicated field, but Charter gives you the opportunity to learn what you don't know, and people are willing to help when they are not overloaded with work. Came into the industry with limited experience (though there is really no other way). Excellent and open management. Charter is a large organization, and my experience is based on my particular area and team. Team management, values, and interactional norms can vary.

Cons

Large corporation, so as an engineer I spend more time than I would like in meetings and coordinating between teams. At least 45h/wk, with many of the principle engineers working upwards of 50.
