Good Luck Moving Up

Pros

Decent health and dental benefits. Very riendly and helpful co-workers (best part about working there!). Semi-laid back atmosphere. Flexible hours as long as you do not work in a department where you are required to be on the phone during a specific time period. Company is involved in community (United Way only) and shows appreciation for employees with two annual picnics. If you are lucky, like me, you may get an excellent manager who works hard to encourage you to aim high and give you as much responsibility as possible in order to gain experience.

Cons

Difficult to move up in this office. Some managers work to keep people beneath them. Pay is not equivalent to experience, education, or performance. If you are looking for a place where a young person can move up and take responsibility, do not count on Speedway unless you are related to someone in upper management, or are an outside hire from a college job fair. Many times they interview 10-15 internal folks and end up hiring from the outside college job fairs when there are plenty of young people with degrees working entry level jobs who already have several years experience with the company and understand its goals and mission. HR is no help in giving advice except for that you should "just keep applying - they may take you later even if they rejected you now". Even veteran workers (10-20+) years are stuck working entry level jobs and have a hard time just moving to another position that pays the same. I could go on about the things I have been told and my own experience, but suffice it to say, this is the one MAJOR issue that Speedway really needs to work on. There are many competent workers who want a change in pace or to take on more responsibility, but get no attention paid to them because hiring managers do not like to bringworkers from the lower end of the pay scale to the higher levels.

Pros

Good learning experience, Good bonus plans, fun place to work(if you have the right team). Easy job to do if you can keep up.

Cons

Lazy employees are not disciplined and often times people who care are expected to pick up their slack. Good teams are often tore apart. After my team was tore apart I was left with a lazy manager and lazy co workers and the store fell apart :(. Talent is recognized but it takes a while to go anywhere. Customers can be very rude.
