Pros
Overall, my time at Splunk was great. It was one of the best employers I've had in my career because of the people and the culture. There were opportunities to take lead on projects, work cross-functionally, and make a difference in ERG groups like mental health, volunteer work, and more. Overall, the pros are:
- Amazing coworkers: I never came across a truly malicious person, and if I did, my manager shielded me from him/her/they. Any disputes at work were kept professional, and there were opportunities to see each other outside of work.
- OK WLB: I never had anyone say no to my vacation requests, and I mean, I will say I hated when some coworkers I partnered on took vacation at the oddest times in a project...
- Fantastic benefits: You get a ton of bonuses like wellbeing-spark, pandemic pay, company-wide time off. The HSA contribution is great, there's plenty of time off, you get July 4th week and Christmas week off. I often got refreshers on stock, but that's on your managers discretion.
Cons
It wasn't all rainbows and butterflies. To sum it up, the company has not been paying its employees well, and truthfully, the leadership has been failing its products. I truly believe in Splunk's product and success in the market, however, the vision and execution are not aligned. Letting the old leader go so abruptly was a key indicator of the future culture. The inadequate development of security products – poor long-term vision vs. short-term vision.
- Poor leadership management
- Poor product vision
- Poor level promotion compensation
