Pros

Interesting mission, lots of resources to experiment, generally positive culture

Cons

Some higher ups on specific teams are both rude to and demand uncommonly high hours from employees who both aren't paid particularly well and lack any meaningful advancement opportunities. This is pretty team specific though, with many other teams cultivating great working environments.

Pros

1. The Mission: Stand Together is one of the most unique organizations in the country. While working in development, you help support hundreds of universities, dozens of venture funded social enterprises, and principled policy-driven organizations. 2. Competitive Pay & Benefits: If you’re paid hourly, there’s plenty of opportunity to pick up overtime during the organization’s summit seasons. The benefits are great as you get a full 6% match on your 401K, a good amount of PTO, decent insurance, free soda, and a week off for Christmas. 3. The People: I had the chance to work with some of the most dedicated and passionate people in the freedom movement. I developed many friendships and mentors. As a heads up, you will not succeed on the development team at Stand Together working from 9-5. You must be passionate about the vision of the organization and utilize the Market-Based Management Framework in order to progress in the organization. 4. Professional Development: if you’re a junior employee, take advantage of the opportunity to join the Koch Associate Program. You get the chance to grow your network by joining a program that has 100 other associates and you spend 1 day a week just working on professional development.

Cons

1. Turnover: The development team has consistently high turnover across the department. If I had to guess, the average tenure of an employee was probably about 1 year and a couple months. It makes it tough to develop long-term working relationships and institutional knowledge is lost. 2. No referral bonus: If you recommend someone for a position, there is no referral bonus program that other comparable organizations have in place. 3. Professional Development: Other than the Koch Associate Program, staff are supposed to drive their own professional development. In theory this sounds great, but there needs to be training for supervisors on how to better develop direct reports so the direct reports feel empowered to drive their own professional growth. 4. Jargon & Onboarding: The Stand Together philanthropic community is massive. Understanding the jargon of the community and Market Based Management will take time.

Thank you for sharing your feedback and suggestions for improvements. Our development team is growing, and while our reporting doesn't support your high turnover comment, I do agree we are always seeking new talent for that group. Employee referrals are our number one source of hire across our philanthropic community, and we are actively exploring ways to better incentivize and recognize our teams for sharing great talent. With a unique culture and lofty mission, we are continually evolving; your feedback is essential to us in understanding how we can find better ways to motivate our valued colleagues. Thank you!
