Dynamic and impactful way to build a career
Pros
The years I spent at Standard Bots have been easily the best of my career. The work was consistently the appropriate level of challenge, in my opinion. Standard Bots, at least when I worked there, wasn't the type of place to work if you wanted a consistent work schedule and certainty about the future. But it also offered an immense amount of flexibility, leniency, and growth opportunity. Standard Bots is the kind of place you work if you want to work directly with company leadership (yes, including the CEO), make an impact, and dream up the future of industrial manufacturing (and more). While the employees and leadership often clash, the truth is that the team is filled with talented and hard-working individuals, and I think the company is usually better for it. Evan is still very much in founder mode rather than CEO mode - he gets involved in each process. He is an incredibly talented thinker and planner, and it's frankly a privilege to have worked with him.
Cons
The remote nature of the company really gets in the way of both interpersonal connection and collaboration. People fail to see eye-to-eye, often for bad reasons and often because they're stewing in their apartments rather than standing next to each other and talking about things as a group. Evan is a very useful engineer, integral to the core functionality of the product, but he is spread so thin (and has a large family) that communication and project planning across the whole organization can be frustrating.
