Pros

The years I spent at Standard Bots have been easily the best of my career. The work was consistently the appropriate level of challenge, in my opinion. Standard Bots, at least when I worked there, wasn't the type of place to work if you wanted a consistent work schedule and certainty about the future. But it also offered an immense amount of flexibility, leniency, and growth opportunity. Standard Bots is the kind of place you work if you want to work directly with company leadership (yes, including the CEO), make an impact, and dream up the future of industrial manufacturing (and more). While the employees and leadership often clash, the truth is that the team is filled with talented and hard-working individuals, and I think the company is usually better for it. Evan is still very much in founder mode rather than CEO mode - he gets involved in each process. He is an incredibly talented thinker and planner, and it's frankly a privilege to have worked with him.

Cons

The remote nature of the company really gets in the way of both interpersonal connection and collaboration. People fail to see eye-to-eye, often for bad reasons and often because they're stewing in their apartments rather than standing next to each other and talking about things as a group. Evan is a very useful engineer, integral to the core functionality of the product, but he is spread so thin (and has a large family) that communication and project planning across the whole organization can be frustrating.

Pros

Managers are a blessing. They understand where you are coming from, are encouraging and appreciative of your progress, and help you make tough decisions. They do not scorn, but rather kindly redirect with effective constructive criticism. The CEO and leadership is extremely positive, which fuels the company forward and provides an exciting company culture where you get to dream big! Being a remote-first company (except for production), even for a mechanical engineer there are great flexibilities to get your work done as you desire. The team is friendly, kind, and united. Solving tough challenges takes teamwork, and the fact that the team is very united (and leadership enables this with in-person time and retreats) is instrumental for the fast-paced. Plus, they're a joy to work with. A lot of the work is innovative and tackles untravelled territory. Through this, you are encouraged to think outside the box and go beyond your expertise to other fields to learn and come up with unconventional solutions.

Cons

Positivity and dreaming big can lead to challenges when things don't go as planned or are harder than expected. However, the team is all in it together, and if you're up for the challenge, you'll love it! Different teams have different priorities which are hard to reconcile. Nonetheless, people are open to discussion, you just have to be the one to commit to it!

Pros

Robotics is undoubtedly going to play a transformative and significant shift in how we experience the world for the better. There are few companies with as many talented people where you can be at the forefront of this work. The leadership team has an ambitious vision for the future and unique skills to be able to accomplish it. I was always so impressed to work with the CEO, who has actually built robots first-hand and understands the engineering behind it. I was always met with open-mindedness to ideas and trusted to do my best work - plus it was inspiring to see how dedicated the CEO and rest of the team were. Few care about quality, design, and excellence as much as this company. This gives me tremendous confidence in their future and ability to compete and differentiate.

Cons

This is a fast-paced team and industry. That means that there should be an expectation that things will change and the team must be adaptable. This can sometimes feel thrashy, but I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing. In this type of work, you should remove your ego, focus on the needs of the business, share your ideas, voice your opinion, and commit to the plans. If you're a proactive team-player, you should have no problems. If you do not thrive in remote work, the current stage of the company might not be for you, but the offsites for team-bonding are as epic as they come.
