Pros

Good for interns. Nine-to-five honeymoon period after acquisition. Great for lateral moves by region or country.

Cons

Half-hearted, symbolic, surface gestures are costumed for a wink-wink "we're all in this together" management strategy right out of Office Space. A make-believe COMMUNITY smoke-screen is cultivated for media and stockholder consumption and protection. The company seems to be still figuring it out, which is strange for a company of 15,000+. For a public company in the acquisitions phase, it is not a surprise that those at the top have lost their moral compasses and any sense of irony. For many, the acquisition and resulting bigness isn't even about the money but becomes a game or ego challenge, about prestige. It certainly isn't good for the 99%. Public corporations have many faces: public, employee, shareholder, insider. For disciplines that involve such passion as architecture requires, these make for strange bedfellows.

Pros

Large diversity in project scopes and disciplines. Great benefits and company stock matching. I was lucky enough to have fair and successful work sharing across various offices. Large potential for climbing the corporate ladder, but at what cost?

Cons

All that matters is that your timesheet is entered on Friday's and that you maintain high utilization or the hammer comes down. Profit center structure encourages competition of the wrong kind, within the company. Too much personnel turnover. Entire company vision seems to be achieved through acquisitions and less organic growth. This lends to the high turnover rate. Top heavy, too much management and not enough production staff. I felt under-valued for the type of work completed.

Pros

They give you a week of paid time off at the winter holidays, as long as they had a good year financially. Yes, this is the best incentive about the firm.

Cons

Globally: They're an acquisition hungry firm. Having gone through one myself, they focus more on the next firm they're going to gobble up than focusing on how to improve the ones they've already purchased. Not every former company fits into your super super corporate mold. I've felt like I work for the Federal Government sometimes. Emails from corporate never feel personal or believable. Locally: Stantec sort of killed our office culture... Slowly people have started realizing it, and when it starts to affect them personally, they leave.
