Pros

There's a great deal of opportunities to learn, as you'll receive nothing in the form of constructive guidance & there are few set processes or rules.

Cons

The founder is an ego-maniac who micro manages to the extent that there's no opportunity to grow past his meager ability to do anything other than work extremely long hours for middling compensation. Starnes is a toxic work environment that emphasizes and rewards blind loyalty to the owner and his wife; interaction with leadership is often punctuated with verbal abuse and personal insults. One of the worst experiences (work or otherwise) I've experienced. Consistent calls from the owner after hours and on weekends; unrealistic expectations for performance are the norm and for good measure you take a walk to a different time with both culture and product as you're selling or creating news paper, with a token attempt at being a digital agency. Average benefits, compensation and facilities are about the only positives of work with Starnes.

Good starting point for recent graduates but provides little growth opportunity

Pros

The coverage area is good and provides young journalists with many opportunities to cover and write about a variety of topics (city council, board of education, business profiles, human interest features, sports, etc). You'll learn good reporting skills that will transfer well to other jobs in journalism. Stories are very self-driven so you'll have the freedom to choose your stories. People who read the papers are also generally very appreciative of our content and will light up when they hear who you work for which is a nice plus.

Cons

This is a small company that, in my opinion, has taken on more than they can handle without expanding the staff appropriately. Few positions have been added but not where they are needed, leading some employees to be incredibly overworked. There is also little room for growth in this company on the editorial side. After two years, most people will find themselves looking for something new to do or learn with few opportunities available. People applying for the editorial division should also be aware that you WILL NOT be compensated or reimbursed for mileage, and this job involves a lot of driving.

Hard work but good people

Pros

I agree with the other reviewer that this is a business with high expectations for its employees. You work hard and wear a lot of hats in a small business, so I can see how this might not be the right fit for every personality style. But there are good coworkers I enjoy spending time with, who have your back if you need help, and these newspapers have a lot of love from the community. And I've found if you can meet the expectations and take on challenges, the pay is good both for the industry and the area.

Cons

It's the news business. Hours are going to be weird and occasionally long, sometimes it's frustrating and you have to be flexible with last-minute changes.
