Pros

Decent pay and predictable bonus structure, diverse workforce, awesome co-workers, opportunities for growth

Cons

Lack of innovation, too many people trying to control, influence, or work on something, with the quality of the final product suffering as a result, no work life balance, micromanagement, awful management (lack of trust and respect) I heard one manager say they were trying to whip a particular team into shape so they are "cracking the whip" and reminding them of core hours with a "butts in chairs" lecture).

Pros

*A lot of time and effort spent towards training new hires *Good place to be if you are a "company man" who likes to play the game *Name recognition from the community and the industry *Company is supportive of those pursuing education...if it is in the interests of the company *Good medical/dental/retirement benefits *Plenty of lateral and upward career opportunities if you are passionate about the insurance industry

Cons

*Low Pay in comparison to other carriers *Resting on the laurels of it's "Good Neighbor" image instead of providing tangible and competent solutions to problems (lagging technology for customers and employees, judging/punishing competent employees over script reading and vague "customer service" protocol instead of actually solving problems, etc) *MICROMANAGING - One thing that you constantly hear is "Everyday is an interview". So, everything you do is monitored and evaluated. It can be attendance, your wardrobe, your participation in meetings, your personality, your posture, your social circle, your vocal inflections, your vernacular on phone calls, and even how long it takes to use the bathroom! *Too many grey areas in what is expected from employees. A constant merry-go-round of managers and trainers who have the ability to hold you accountable for rules they make up on the spot - even if it goes against what the previous person advised.

Pros

Review of State Farm on Glassdoor consist of 2 distinct groups: employees of the company, and employees of independent contractor agents. They experiences of these groups are totally different. My review is of the company job environment. Good place to gain some experience working in a Corporate environment to build a resume. Competitive benefits package. Some potential for advancement.

Cons

The company culture is in a large state of flux. What attracted me to State Farm 30 years ago was the strong ethic values and commitment to take care of the policyholder. Now, the culture is geared towards metrics which may not actually benefit the policy holder. Work/Life Balance is a huge issue, and employee feedback is very negative on this issue. Leadership is not able to act independently but rather has become more “management” versus “leadership”. The heavy reliance on metrics reduces employees to a numerical score and has sacrificed the development of positive employer/employee relationships. Job Satisfaction - employees tend to rate this area low due to the limited discretion they have in performing their jobs. The salary compensation system is set up to limit raises to rates that tend to be lower than the rate of inflation. While there is a salary range for each position, employees hired today will never get higher than 2/3 of the way up the scale.
