      Great stability and benefits

      Pros

      Benefits are good and salaries in core areas (Underwriting and Claims) are better than other insurers. Once in, most are here for the long haul because of the competitiveness of the benefits package.

      Cons

      Opportunities are limited to those who have insurance industry education. The same value is not placed on advanced academic degrees. Little consideration is given for those who have a higher degree of business and industry acumen (and leadership aptitude) without the designations. This creates a huge gap in logic, considering the knowledge retention rate is so low among those who have the designations. I've been told by several higher level leaders, obtaining the designation "shows just how much you will do to be considered for advancement." (And years of work to get a Masters or PhD does not?)

      Pros

      Pros - friendly people, a lot of opportunity for learning and career development, numerous opportunities for advancement as long as you're mobile, can truly be a "9-to-5" job so promotes work/life balance, great benefits, overall leadership does seem to care about employees, equal amount of women and men in executive positions. Also, if you're not happy in your current position or department, generally they are willing to work with you on finding a better role/fit within the company.

      Cons

      Very corporate with too many levels of management, lack of innovation due to corporate structure and bureaucracy, if not mobile your advancement opportunities are fairly limited, headquarters is in the middle of nowhere Illinois, the feeling of not really making an impact because company is so huge.
