Workplace engages in too much office politics; passive-aggressive behavior

Pros

There were some interesting projects. Can't say I didn't learn anything.

However, the workplace feels too adverserial, with many of the senior people and managers seeming to exclude the newer employees. There are of course the formalities of lunches together, but if you are not savvy enough in navigating the field here, you'll be excluded from after hour get togethers. Some people in fact can be just plain rude, as when I had to get IT repair work done. Because as stated before with the senior people knowing management very well, if you are on the bad side of one employee, you'll be on the bad side of everyone. And it's very easy to get on the bad side of an employee as some feel that they can get away with bad behavior given that they can manipulate the story to their advantage to management. Attempts to bring concerns to management only result in scapegoating on your end.

This is the same review as appeared on July 10, 2015 after this person was terminated for time-sheet fraud. This is simply a vindictive effort to damage the company after employing this person for years and providing numerous challenging projects and superior pay. My response to the claims appear in that prior review. We promote a very respectful and inclusive culture. Everyone is invited to events, both company sponsored and others such as skiing trips. I personally invited this person on numerous occasions to come to events, including the annual company party which he never attended.

Great place to work if you enjoy technical challenge and a rapid pace

Pros

When you work at Sterling, you'll have a high degree of flexibility and responsibility. Work schedules and locations are very flexible; some people come/go early and some late. Some are always in the office and some are always at home and some mix it up, all depending on project needs. You are responsible for getting your work done and doing a good job; nobody will micro manage you. But there are high quality standards, so if you don't get your work done on time or done well, you'll definitely hear about it either from your manager or the quality department. Snacks, soda, and coffee are always available. The IT Director doubles as a community event organizer, so there are things to do together such as paintball and skiing trips. The management if very ethical in how they treat both employees and clients; they really try to do the right thing when problems occur, as they always do in real life.

Cons

Even though I like to do different things, occasionally the fast changing projects is a little stressful. I think they try to keep people focused on their project(s), but sometimes client needs change rapidly and employees have to context switch and get up the learning curve quickly.

Pros

As a startup, they had up to date technologies and interesting projects.

Cons

The employees are very cliquish. Unless you are able to get along with them, you will be excluded in social functions and even be engaged in negative work politics. Since the long-term employees have formed the company with the managers, getting on their bad side means getting on the managers' bad side. Some of the long-term employees were even rude, feeling they could get away with this due to protection from management. Projects are also unfocused, with a lot of switching around with no warning.

Thank you for your feedback; it would help a lot if you would air your feelings to me directly so that we could take appropriate action to resolve this situation. While I am bothered by all of these perceptions, the part about exclusion from social functions is quite striking as my belief is that there is a genuine effort to include people who are interested in events/activities. I sincerely hope to fix whatever problem is causing your dissatisfaction as our employees are very important to me personally and to the organization.
