Pros

I must admit, Stryker does do one thing really well: talent acquisition. I've never met such a large collection of winners in one place before. It has a culture that seeks out competitive, intelligent younger people (mostly fresh college grads) who thrive at being the best, and enjoy being recognized for it. As a result, you get engaged, hard working, talented future leaders who thrive on challenges and growth. With those ingredients, naturally it’s easy to get on board with the company’s vision. I did love everyone’s commitment to being the best because it motivates you to better as well. Sure work/life balance is great here but hardly anyone has kids fresh out of college. They're all accustomed to burning the midnight oil, just like finals week. It’s awesome to be able to count on your colleagues. Friendships I’ve acquired at Stryker has certainly survived beyond my time there. Most managers have left good impressions on me and I was able to have positive influence on others. I would go out of way to write a great referral letter for just about anyone from Stryker.

Cons

Despite the competitive nature of their employees, Stryker is not competitive at all when it comes to pay, especially here in the bay area. It's next to impossible to afford a 1-bedroom apartment here with their pay scale. Thus you have 4-6 managers (half of whom possess MBA’s) shacking up as roommates in order to afford rent or stay at home with the parents. So... what ends up happening? The majority of the exceptional talent ends up leaving once they hit their stride (usually when they realize they could get paid 50-100% more elsewhere). In my opinion, this is a crucial turning point for any company, especially medical device manufacturers. This is the point when Stryker has successfully groomed their talent with industry awareness, growth mindsets and primed all the tools to drive innovation and take Stryker further… this is also the point when competitors swoop in. We all understand, money is not everything. However, after about 2 years on the grind, going above and beyond it’s tough to stay loyal. If you’re still struggling to keep up with rent and huge debts from college loans, offers of a bigger paycheck becomes more attractive.

Pros

Stryker offers a great benefits package with health care coverage, nutritional counseling, a gym and 401 k coverage. There is a sink or swim environment which can be exhilarating for those who thrive under pressure. Many of the employees are wonderful people that may become life long friends.

Cons

As others have mentioned, Stryker can be incredibly cliquey. It often has a feel of high school or a fraternity/sorority. Networking with the right people is more important to advancement than performance. Much of the staff is very young and driven. That can be an asset, but inexperienced, ill equipped managers can destroy a productive unit.

Stryker Endoscopy: not many chances for true product innovation

Pros

- 8am - 5pm type of work; no need to stay later unless you want to. - free drinks; although the good ones are gone quickly - if you get lucky, you can meet some really talented people. These are typically the older ones with years of experience. They are the best to hang out with and just to learn from. - there are some really admirable people who are great engineers and people. You have to be there for some time to work directly with them. - they go all out for Halloween. I mean team decorations, skits, costumes, candy, competition. - they have a women's network that I think put on really good events for women and men. - everybody works-out during lunch. Very active bunch of people.

Cons

- I was excited for the product innovation portion. However in big companies, you don't really get much of this. It is mainly just making better what they have done in the past. Not too exciting. - learned that a lot of the products are made by other manufacturers and Stryker puts their name on it. They are a really great sales company. - they boast about how they have this young, hip vibe. This is one of their selling points. However this vibe is extremely cliqueish. Think high school wrapped up in sorority/fraternity type. They exclude for sure. On an individual basis they can be good to talk to. In a group, they have like this really weird mob mentality. - HR definitely has their favorites. If you are not one of them, good luck come review season. - some people who you think are your friends will be the first to write a negative review about you and bring your score way down. They will say nice things about you in your face, but trash your name and work behind you. It was so weird to witness. - they have some really bad apples at the company that they can't seem to get rid of. These people are so bad that people drop out of teams because of it. People also pull you aside to tell you to watch out about these people. - managers are too young and not ready to manage. They need more training on how to be an effective team leader. - there needs to be more on the job training. - it's weird how there is this huge rift between engineers and marketing. -this office is severely lacking in the diversity department.
