Pros

The Scarborough office is in a convenient location, but that's all I can think of when it comes to positive things for a claims job in the scarborough Maine office.

Cons

The worst worst managers in the Short Term Disability claims department in Scarborough Maine. So unfriendly, and they make their employees cry and feel worthless even though they work so so hard. Micromanaging to the extreme . would come into emails daily like "I watched the numbers like a hawk yesterday and can you tell me what you spent most of your time on, because your production is not where it should be for someone who worked 8 hours " the worst place I've ever worked and I know a lot of people who left the Sunlife in the Short term disability department after a very short amount of time after starting the job due to abuse. We all complained to HR. I hope it made a difference for some of the people who haven't been able to find another job yet.

Politics of a regime change

Pros

Ability to work from home. Work-life balance is excellent. Substantial vacation time. Good exit packages when layoffs occur. If you're complacent you can stay here for a long time.

Cons

Yearly layoffs and they often occur around the holidays. They've been eliminating older employees for years now. If you're over 50 you're on the chopping block. Office culture in Canada is night and day compared to US. Folks in CA like their job and they're proud of the company. People in the US show up for a pay check and often wonder if they're part of the next round of layoffs. Office politics is brutal. Lots of large personalities here with no room for growth making pretend that this is corporate America. Several managers/Dir/AVP's are brutal to work for. Clearly they are "lifers" and not happy about it and feel the need to treat employees very poorly. Regime changes, SLF loves to bring in flunkies from other organizations such as Bank of Montreal or Lincoln Financial. They should try to minimize the potential impact and only bring on one employee from another firm, not the entire "click."

Pros

Fair benefits though they got cut back over the years. Good work life balance for most

Cons

Bad career development. Spent way too much on sales and sponsorships. HR department goes by the book when it benefits them but makes excuses when it doesn't. Badly run and now employees not involved in the decisions are paying for it. Employees that survive the layoff, including the new college leadership people, should take note and get out quick as it will get worse.
