Pros

Finance gets a bad reputation for company culture, but Symetra really bucks the trend. They're good people on a good mission (at least inside Individual Life). Great benefits for medical (HSA FTW), dental (haven't paid for anything in 2 years), vision (bought like 5k worth of glasses in my second month and it was <1k to get out the door). 401k was 1:1 match for the first 6%, vested on day one, on a convenient trading platform (Fidelity). Internally they also have so many amazing details that instill a sense of diversity and equality. They have a job profiles website internally that provides transparent salaries for each position and it's actually possible to move across and up within the company.

Cons

While the "company culture" is great, there are certain Dilbert cliches that hurt the "productivity culture". Lots of meetings and lots of "because of compliance" moments even every week. Hard to say these can be avoided since finance is such a regulated industry. They really do try to make it painless and I do think they earnestly try to make it as easy as possible. I think this is more about your personality vs reality of working in finance and this is intended as more of a "not a big deal for me, but certainly not for everyone" comment.

Thank you for this detailed review. A lot of work goes into making sure we offer competitive benefits and compensation packages. It is great to receive feedback on how these programs impact our employees. Having such a focus on compliance can sometimes seem daunting, but as you mention, it’s a necessary part of the industry in which we operate.

Pros

Good work/life balance. Pay is decent. They do care about their employees. You can get promoted if you work towards it and work hard. It can be stressful at times but most people have your best interest in mind.

Cons

The only thing I see that I would change is the fact that Symetra is very clear on how they lean politically and I don’t think that should be so clear for as National or International Corporation.
