Not perfect, but good so far

Pros

* Great location - near restaurants and the transit center. * Competitive salary and good benefits package (including 401k match and generous stock purchase plan). * Good worklife balance. * Unlike many other companies in the area and/or in the same industry (including the company I left earlier this year), Symetra is in very good financial shape and is actually poised for growth.

Cons

* Change management - I'm ok with change, but feel that communication with employees could be better. I do believe that the company is moving in the right direction though. * Like with most companies, employee experience/morale probably varies a lot by department. I can only speak for my own experience, which has been positive. * Parking is expensive.

Pros

. People are great to work with, most of them work very hard. . Casual dress for those who are want to wear jeans.

Cons

. Contempt for employees - lip service from management about the company being 'the place to be' . No longer a good place for work/life balance. Flexible schedules and possibility of working from home have been taken away from a lot of departments. No comp time. . Employees are micro-managed, their professional advice is rarely taken into consideration. . Stressful environment for IT employees are they are expected to do Production Support as well as Development using the Agile/Scrum methodology. . Unreasonable expectations are pressed upon employees, like maintaining a system availability of 99.79%, while no investments are being made into redundant systems, and a less-than-average responsiveness from our outsourced servers service provider. . Pay is lower than the market.

Pros

Benefits are consistent with other companies of Symetra's size. Company location is an advantage; with transportation, exercise, eating places and shopping close by. The lobby area is a great place to get away and just walk around or sit in a nice cozy bench by the fire pit. The culture is generally welcoming at first look.

Cons

The product lines are each a culture unto themselves. Each product line operates completely differently and separately from each other. Deep divisions between the groups exist. Middle managers do not entertain ideas from their staff. Training is lacking and this is difficult for new employees. New employees must learn where they fit in the pecking order within their group. Employees with seniority are concerned with protecting the territory they've built over the years. The grapevine network is very powerful.
