Technology behind times

Pros

Flexible working schedules and quick interviews.

Cons

Technology well below standards. IT very unhelpful. Some upper level employees have been there several decades and make it almost impossible to advance, be treated equally, or involved. Your title means nothing. There is little or no internal human communication. Your co-workers barely will acknowledge your existance. Basically you are there for a paycheck while you look for another job. I have never worked for a company where I feel more disconnected. The dept I am in is way below average in procedures, time-frames, technology. People are VERY controlling. It's like walking on egg shells in every task. Very dis-heartening. Could be a great company, but chooses to not advance or be friendly. I was so excited to start this new position. I was very unhappy to find out my title was a lie and my input was worthless. Expect grueling hours of mindless over-time.

Pros

It is a very new company (split from Safeco in 2005), so the focus (at least for the C-level executives) is fairly entrepreneureal. The CEO has expressed numerous times that he's interested in changing how we do business and looking outside of the box for ways to take our company forward. As of late 2008 we are launching into some areas (such as social media) that are new to us and this makes it a very exciting time to work here. At the same time, the company is privately owned by Birkshire Hathaway (among others), thus the company is very secure financially.

Cons

While the most senior executives at the company may be focused on changing how we do business, this mindset is not shared by all executives. Employees in general are frustrated with the compensation and the handling of promotions. Additionally, there are some serious communications issues within management.

Pros

It's better then being unemployeed!

Cons

Compensation is less than competitive, at best. Benefits - Health, Dental and Vision are provided but don't think you can afford them with what they will pay you. Training - Limited training is provided for your position. After that your on your own. Career Growth - Frustrating at best. The best career growth opportunity is sneeking time at lunch to look for job on monster. Perks - A waterbottle you can fill up in the drinking fountin, a 10% discount to 3 gyms. Coffee or other drinks are not provided, coffee makers are prohibited in fact.
