Pros

The benefits at SU are terrific and comprehensive. There is also a nice grant writing series that trains researchers on writing successful grants that I found useful.

Cons

SU is a very on and off place to work as a researcher. Some of the groups are terrific, with collaboration and scientific rigor, others are terrible groups to work in with little or no support. In the biomedical and chemical engineering department, the postdocs have very little communication, and science seems to take a back seat to the egos of the professors in the department. The collaborative environement is minimal, and the financial support lacking as well. Overall, I'm disappointed to say that I cannot reccomend SU as a place to advance your career as a scientist in training.

Pros

Educational benefits - the university encourages ongoing development of employees and of family members - a big plus. Summer hours for administrative staff are appreciated, diversity of religious holidays observed. Excitement of working within an educational environment means there are always fresh ideas and young blood to keep things exciting. Discounted tickets to major sporting events (or at least, the only sporting events that matter in Syracuse!). Access to university resources (physical / intellectual as well as human) allow you to expand in your job. Depending on where you work, facilities can be very welcoming. Stability of work force is nice.

Cons

Parking is very expensive and walking is highly unpleasant when the weather is bad. The stability of the work force is a plus but can sometimes lead to entrenched thinking that is not always helpful. As with any university, campus politics can sometimes be a drag, but are avoidable if one chooses not to get involved. Technology challenges among the different schools was a little frustrating to deal with - again, perhaps related to campus politics. While general development opportunities abound, career advancement may require moving out to move up - and the dearth of similar organizations in upstate New York can make that difficult.
