Pros

The overall benefits package from TIAA-CREF keeps it among the best for those who value long-term investing and a broad range of 'perks'. The people employed here work as a team; this is certainly true among the professional ranks. Contributions towards the pension plan are quite generous and not something you can easily find elsewhere.

Cons

Along with many other financial institutions, TIAA-CREF needs to tighten its belt which translates into reduced spending on those things that are not critical. There is uncertainty and low morale in some areas.

Pros

They've got a nice building. The workers like the janitors, engineers, security guards, those who make the building run are the salt of the earth.

Cons

Management was insensitive.Unfortunately the engineers, the janitors, the security guards, and those who make the building run are treated by those who manage them like they're not valuable to the company. And assistants to lower managers are treated the same way. One woman who had been with the company for twenty years and whose husband was one of the head engineers was walked out by her boss who was a stupid egomaniac who used big words clumsily.

Pros

The pay and benefits are very fair. However, they now expect you to give up your nights and weekends for the greater good. They are now like every other Company where the executives are paid millions in bonus, but the rank and file may get nothing for their hard work. The Company became this way under the leadership of Herb Allison who ascribed to Jack Welchs philosphy. He instituted a rank and yank system that is still being used to this day. The system sounds fair since you would think that the best employees would be the best compensated, but their rating system is inherenty unfair and can be manipulated. Also, the members of the executive team are not subject to this system.

Cons

No set career path. Very few opportunities for advancement.
