Pros

Going through this program was one of the best decisions that I have ever made. Not only am I now in a career where I feel fulfilled every day but I am making a positive impact on so many of our youth. I am living my dream and I am still growing every day from my experiences in the classroom. ITF was so supportive in this journey. Teaching isn't easy, but with the training and support from my coaches and the ITF staff I was fully prepared to step in to the classroom. The best part-I still receive support! Thank you, ITF!

Cons

Learning anything new is hard and teaching can be even harder! You have to be prepared to work hard and think outside of the box when you decide to go in to this field. But, with a positive mindset and an openness to feedback, you will have the opportunity to soar. You get out of this what you put in, and if you put in your best you will be more than happy with the outcomes!

Pros

Expert coaches provide training that enables you to master the craft of great teaching. The summer training is focused around intense classroom practice centered around actual teaching experience and focused practice on core skills such as creating a positive classroom culture, and delivering content clearly. Provide ample opportunity to practice, reflect and improve with personalized tailored constructive feedback until essential techniques become second nature. Through the first year of teaching experience and gaining certification, TNTP Academy sets clear expectations and continually assesses your progress as a new teacher. The coaches identify areas of growth and customize coursework to address those needs. Teacher certification after clearing ACE observations is awarded only to new teachers who have demonstrated mastery of instructional skills and a consistent ability to help their students learn and thrive. Teach NOLA ensures that all teacher fellows enter the classroom ready to make a strong start and a life time of difference for students who need them the most. Teach NOLA trains fellows to not just get certified but to be a teacher with a proven track record of classroom success.

Cons

Very intense and rigorous through out the year.

Pros

I enjoyed my experience with the Chicago Teaching Fellows. I was a career changer and wanted an alternative to going to back to school. I knew I wanted to teach special education, and I liked that CTF allowed me to jump right into a full time teaching job at CPS. Plus, unlike other programs, I was an actual CPS employee from the start (not an employee of the certification program). The school year program is excellent. It is organized and well thought out. I was impressed with the quality of the coaching during the school year. My coach was always there for me if I needed help, and was a fantastic resource. That said, you will need to take control of your own development as a teacher. If you are someone who is willing to put it some of the legwork yourself (they won't spoon feed you), this a great opportunity. Besides, teaching is a lot of figuring it out for yourself- I learned so much by hitting the ground running. CTF was certainly there to help me if I needed it. I'm so glad I did the program, and I would choose it again in a heart beat.

Cons

The summer program (pre-service training) was often very frustrating. You will work with season/summer staff for the most part (not the regular staff). For example, my summer coach was not very helpful to me and didn't seem to understand the program herself. Summer is stressful because your performance ultimately decides whether you will continue for the rest of the year, and be allowed to teach. Summer felt very disorganized -- BUT, get through the summer (don't let it discourage you!) and the school year program is a night and day difference. The full time/ school year staff is much better and incredibly helpful, and the school year program was much more organized. You will be happy you stuck with it! Plus, it sounds like summer training will be structured differently this year, so hopefully it will be a much better experience.
