Pros

The best thing about TVA is you accrue lots of time off. Your annual leave is also separated from your sick leave. Depending on your time of service you can get anywhere from 2.5 to 5 weeks annual leave a year with another 2.5 weeks of sick leave and 10 holidays. The pay and benefits are generally better than average.

Cons

The worst thing about TVA is that it is a 24/7/365 power company. If you work at a power facility you will have a tether and there are times you will be working 60-70 hr weeks for months on end. TVA is also downsizing and a lot of jobs/benefits are on the chopping block. TVA tends to hire management from outside TVA.

Pros

Good pay for the area. Retirement benefits used to be strong (they just eliminated their pension plan). Medical plan is solid. Large enough that you can change careers at the company.

Cons

TVA does a massive reorganization about every three years. It's scary as hell. They have very poor performance management so the low performers survive (they NEVER fire anyone and they don't give performance based raises). Consequently, they have to do reorgs to reduce headcount (most organizations would just manage out the low performers). But it is a really excruciating exercise for highly conscientious high performers - because you are under constant threat of job loss.

Pros

Competitive salaries and ample time off. TVA has a long history of being one of the best places to work in the region.

Cons

Under the leadership of Bill "I'm just like you, but richer" Johnson, TVA has been steadily removing benefits, and laying off employees. They no longer offer a pension plan, gym benefits, or remote access reimbursement. Constant reorgs lead to an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
