Typical large government business that doesn't reward excellent performance

Pros

Good benefits, generous leave policy, decent pay. Pretty typical for government workers.

Cons

TVA doesn't differentiate and reward excellent performers, but does reward mediocre performance by giving same bonuses to those whose performance exceeds expectations. Management in IT treats working level employees as lower than themselves and talks down to them. Promotions are often made by who you know and not what you know or how you've performed. Several managers in IT have been promoted over the last year that were previously demoted and almost fired due to poor performance. Too many managers are hiring and promoting their buddies from previous groups or other companies and not selecting the best candidate for the job. Not a place you want to work if you're younger and want to move up in your career by honest hard work where you hope to get promoted based on your performance.

Pros

Large Organization with many opportunities because of high turnover. The Knoxville worksite is a lower stress environment. Vacation package and Livewell Centers are excellent.

Cons

The Power Production Plant Schedules can be insane with a poor work life management balance. A weak First Line Management with heavy HR Force in order to keep wages down. Most Senior Positions are filled from outside, so no inside employee track to Senior Positions. Health Benefits are weak and expensive. The Retirement System is deeply underwater. Per current media reports the company may be "for sale".

Pros

The people you work with are great.

Cons

They have no problem at all interpreting federal working hour limitations in a way that involves violations. Management will outright lie to you. Items that should be normally handled with discipline get blown way out of proportion if caught by OIG. Over a 4 year period I saw 4 good people get fired for items at any other utility would be addressed with discipline. If you aren't from here or aren't a yes man you will never get promoted. They will honestly argue over one hour of OT. Once I had been there for 12 hours, something happened to the plant and they told me I had to stay over night then because I was the duty manager I'd have to stay over on days too. Managers never see their people, many never make an effort. Nuclear Safety is not a priority. The operating staff at a nuclear facility needs to be paying attention to the reactors, not babysitting the craft and collecting data for Management Review Meetings. Operators spend 90% of their effort and time doing stuff that has nothing to do with operating the reactors. You will never, and I repeat never get vacation. The Design Basis issues concerning flooding and dam breaks should sincerely scare the public. Especially since TVA Management from the plant level up turned a knowing blind eye to them
