Pros

TVA offers a competitive salary for the Chattanooga Valley area.

Cons

Very political and racist company. The majority of Employees are given opportunities based on who they know or who they have "relationships" with at the company.

Pros

I was compensated well over my four years at TVA. The work environment was good and provided me an opportunity to grow professionally. There was always the chance to do something that mattered. For the most part, the people I interacted with on a daily basis were extremely high class and a great joy to be around.

Cons

Many companies talk about valuing people and how people are their greatest asset. It is my opinion that this value was poorly implemented during a recent re-organization that led to my departure from the company. I know these kinds of changes are difficult and are, to some degree, just business, but there is still a way to handle things that values people for their contributions. I have never in my life felt more devalued personally and professionally, so that is definitely one con I have for TVA.

Pros

Good pay for the area. Retirement benefits used to be strong (they just eliminated their pension plan). Medical plan is solid. Large enough that you can change careers at the company.

Cons

TVA does a massive reorganization about every three years. It's scary as hell. They have very poor performance management so the low performers survive (they NEVER fire anyone and they don't give performance based raises). Consequently, they have to do reorgs to reduce headcount (most organizations would just manage out the low performers). But it is a really excruciating exercise for highly conscientious high performers - because you are under constant threat of job loss.
