Pros

Decent pay and decent benefits.

Cons

"Fake it until you make it" is the philosophy of many. Some people get the fast track to promotion based on being related to a current or former high ranking person and others get the run-around. "Team work" is a joke because they utilize the bell curve performance management philosophy, which is corrosive to the very concept of "team-work". Management will make promises they won't keep and cliq up. Advancement is more about butt-kissing & diversity than anything else. Competition is shady and colleagues will stab you in the back to protect themselves or advance their own careers. Despite the "warm and fuzzy open door policy and transparency" agenda they push, management does not care about individual contributors. I watched them lay a job off on Friday and turn around and announce a budget increase for suppliers on the following Monday.

Pros

Salary: All employees are paid well, according to industry standards Benefits: 401K is one of the best matches in the industry, health insurance is relatively inexpensive, supplemental insurance is inexpensive Work/Life balance: Sick leave, Annual leave is plenty and supervision always tries to accommodate

Cons

Budget: TVA is operated off a debt ceiling. They do not run like a for profit business. This leaves them with finding ways to reduce expense, vice increase revenue. The easiest way to reduce expense is reduce employees. There have been "voluntary" lay offs every year since I've been here, and "re-org's" every other year, which results in reduced head count. Work load: work load is high. There is the same amount of work, with less people to accomplish it. They are not good at introducing technologies that help with this
