Culture and Transparency Have Declined Significantly

Pros

When I first joined Tanium, I genuinely enjoyed my role. The environment was fast-paced and often chaotic, but the work was engaging and I had the opportunity to collaborate with some great colleagues. Early on, there was a sense of energy around the company and the mission, and many people were motivated to contribute and grow.

Cons

Over time, the culture and leadership transparency deteriorated. Leadership regularly hosts town halls and all-hands meetings that invite employee questions, but clear answers are rarely provided. Responses tend to be vague or overly polished, leaving employees with more confusion than clarity. The company has also gone through frequent layoffs that are often described internally as “reorganizations.” While restructuring can happen at any company, the frequency and framing of these changes has created ongoing uncertainty and has negatively impacted trust across teams. Career growth can also be frustrating. Advancement does not always appear tied to clear or consistent criteria, and many employees feel that promotions depend more on visibility or internal politics than performance. As a result, employees are often encouraged to be patient about future opportunities that may never materialize. More recently, leadership has appeared to rely on retention incentives — including quick promotions or compensation adjustments — to encourage certain employees to stay amid growing turnover. At the same time, colleagues and long-standing team members have been impacted by ongoing layoffs. This dynamic has created a difficult environment where many employees feel the culture has become increasingly toxic and unstable. There is also a noticeable gap between the company’s stated values and what employees experience day to day. Messaging emphasizes teamwork, integrity, and doing the right thing, but many decisions made by leadership do not reflect those principles. It is also worth noting that the company was recognized as a “Great Place to Work” several years ago, but employee sentiment today feels very different from that period. Morale has declined and many long-tenured employees have left. Finally, despite ongoing speculation about a potential IPO, the company has remained private for more than two decades, and leadership provides little clarity around long-term plans.

Started out great but the culture changed.

Pros

My direct and most of the greater team are really good people. Tanium makes a point to hire good people. The insurance is competitive and the allowance on volunteer time is nice. I usually had the resources I needed to perform well. I do miss the team and the first years I experienced there were great.

Cons

They are undergoing forever layoffs - mini and continuous since 2024 which makes the environment constantly stressful because you aren't sure who is next. Plus there is a lot org reorganization which also is part of the constant downsizing. I was laid off but it wasn't surprising given the signs proceeding the event. I was also high-performance, had received raises and bonuses, etc so it was most definitely not performance related but a matter of numbers since my role was outsourced to Poland. I also have witnessed a big culture shift, where it seems like bringing in former team members from other companies and focusing on male counterparts has become the trend. One leader in particular was behind the scenes trying to manipulate things and pit managers against one another, which was very unlike what I had experienced there previously. Finally, the RSU situation is a tax burden I didn't for see. Plus, they decided to deny them to people who didn't meet the RTO standard but didn't actually warn people this would happen which feels unethical.

Pros

• Offices are nice - good layout, well run, large variety of free (and high quality) snacks/beverages stocked in offices and $25 daily credit given to all employees who come into the office for catered lunches, basically uber eats-like (this is huge for personal cost savings - imo arguably the biggest, tangible financial benefit offered at Tanium, since the 401k program is terrible and RSUs are speculatory). Workplace/office managers are also very friendly and professional - they constantly organize fun events too. • Unlimited vacation offered to some employees - definitely can be a "scam" but if you don't feel guilty about using it then it's a good perk - people seem to generally take advantage of it • RSUs granted to all employees - could be worth something someday, maybe. • Flexibility for working hours and hybrid days in the office - hybrid days are counted per month, based on a weekly average, so you can "bank" your days more on some weeks to offset not coming in on other weeks. Hybrid days also aren't counted by hours yet, so you can come in for a few hours, then leave, and it'll count for a day in the office. • Since it's a smaller company, there's plenty of opportunity to find unique work and potentially grow/be promoted quickly • Good work-life balance overall - if you draw boundaries and don't feel pressured by some people/managers who seem like they work 24/7, there's a lot of flexibility and leeway to people who get their work done • Base salary I think is also overall good overall compared to the market for similar positions and level of effort • For all the cons I've said about some of the people, there are some genuinely great people here who are friendly, intelligent, and do great work - if there weren't a good number of people I genuinely like working with and have become good friend with, here, I would've left by now.

Cons

• 401k program is terrible and management has been saying for years that they will reevaluate it "soon," but never does. It's not even close to industry standard and other benefits don't excuse it being this bad • Small waves of layoffs that hit different business units without warning, even when leadership promises things are going "fine" - it's never enough to make big news, but suddenly like 3-5 people from an org will be gone overnight and happens basically every quarter, it seems, and it's quite unsettling when it happens • Lots of internal politics between departments - teams refusing to work cooperatively or even undercutting or trying to sabotage other teams because their leaders don't get along. Creates a tough environment where people are distrustful or afraid to communicate openly • Some “old boy’s club” culture from when the company was much smaller. Certain people seem to be part of an “inner circle” clique that can basically do anything they want and can get away with being poor performers. • Titles are weird - a lot of the position titles don't match up with industry standard names • Challenges with workforce offshoring - they're started offshoring a ton of positions in Poland, which makes it difficult and frustrating to get work done when all the key resources are offline as soon as your day starts.
