Cons
If you’re a current employee- avoid disclosing ADA conditions unless you want repercussions such as shorter shifts, having to step down from leadership, documented conversations with leadership that seem innocent enough, having to “provide” medical information that legally they’re not supposed to ask for, or having the information shared with others in the store that leads to insulting/ignorant comments about said condition. For those interested in applying- keep it professional! Do NOT offer personal information that cannot be asked lawfully pertaining to the job position! Reasons- if an ADA condition is more “difficulty” than a store deems “reasonable”, wants to invest in, if it fails to benefit/enhance the store’s current culture and local reputation, or poses risk of “bad PR practices” for the company/shareholders, proving these scenarios is challenging unless you have deep pockets, great lawyers, time and incredibly thick skin. Keep in mind that employment is “at-will”- meaning you can be let go for no reason or any “reason” that they don’t have to tell you. Be careful and KNOW YOUR WORTH. The “guest” or customer is NOT always right- being yelled at, swore at, called names and insulted, threatened, and having things thrown at you is unacceptable. Some stores may make excuses for these regular “guests”
